MS Intellimouse screwing up- need help

I have W2K. I had 98 forever and the mouse worked fine. But now when playing UT; which is all I play, suddenly the busy cursor appears over my crosshair and the mouse stops responding. Sometimes when I quit there is an error that says Driver needed- ipfilter.sys. So I browse and point to it but it does no good. I have reinstalled the latest drivers 5 times, ran scandisk and defrag, and it still does it. What can I do about this? Other ppl have had this problem and just gave up and bought a logitech or boomslang. I would like to fix this instead.

Also have tried playing in software mode and it still happens (so it's not the video card). Have completely uninstalled and reinstalled using the default W2K drivers and that's no good either. When I whip the cursor across the screen in windows I can tell that it's sluggish sometimes. So I don't think it's just the game. Also there are no apps running besides UT that I know of and I certainly haven't installed anything new that would just be running in the bkgd.
