MS: Kinect no longer required

The only $350 mention I see in the article is talking about the Wii.

I'm still not getting an Xbox One after a regular Xbox failure and two Xbox 360 failures.

he was suggesting to make a non kinect model, which should have been there since the beginning, most ps4 preorders were of the non-camera version

This seems like a no-brainer to me. I can't think of any reason why you would require the Kinect to be connected if you could turn it off completely (i.e. not listening for "XBOX On") via the settings.

Amazon has the launch edition of the ps3 (no camera) on the top 20 best sellers of 2013 in videogames (#3), the camera, or camera bundle is nowhere to be found on the list of 100

this is great news.

the trifecta would now be if they announce a non-kinect version for $400.

it's amazing how microsoft's original business model is basically 100% out the window at this point.

EDIT:

anyway to get a mod to merge this into the official xbox one thread? seems like it should just be in there.

I think they should release a Kinect-less version, but I get the argument why they are keeping it in. It allows developers to use the Kinect freely, without worrying about marking games for a smaller market.

That said, I have still yet to see a Kinect game that is really compelling enough to warrant the price of Kinect.

I am eager to see if the new Kinect boasts significantly improved performance.

I misread him then.

Good, I don't want the camera with my preorder.

I said this when they did the unboxing and showed us the on/off switch. I said "who wants to bet that kinect requirement was BS to make everyone plug it in so that they could get devs to adopt it's usage?"

Turns out I was correct. They put it in the box and charge for it because without it in the box nobody will buy it (or very limited market penetration) and no devs would touch it. They said it was required at first because I believe, but cannot prove, that they were purposely misleading customers in order to make sure everyone connected it. Thus they could tell developers that everyone has a kinect connected.

There is no PS4 that comes with the eye. That is separate and Sony made sure to mention as much all the way back to E3.

Any PS4 that comes with it is a bundle setup by a particular retailer. It does not come in the box.

Yup, they've basically struck out on basically their console plan for the next 8yrs. Microsoft already doesn't look good this coming generation.

Too much 180s my head is spinning.

This is good news though since I'll probably buy Xbox One later on when Halo comes out.

they look much better now in the eyes of many than they did the week of e3, so i'm gonna have to disagree with you there.

You got it backwards. They would have looked terrible if they stuck to the plan at E3. Now they are actually doing it right. There's nothing to stop the XB1 from being as successful as the 360 now really.

Very cool. This actually opens the door to a $299 pricing refresh of the XB1 come holidays '14 pretty easily (sans Kinect of course). I will probably grab one at that point. I'm still on the fence on the PS4. I'm planning on waiting out the initial hysteria, seeing how different friends like theirs before leaping. Even $399 is no chump change, and given how little I use the PS3/360, I don't want to waste $$.

Now if we could just get rid of the XBL Gold paywalls, then we'd actually have a console worth buying!

There's nothing wrong with the XB1 as it is. It is worth buying, just the same as I feel the PS4 is worth buying.

For the most part. It's such an insignificant bother that I don't know why they insist on it though. Hell, if you think about it, it's more likely to make Microsoft MORE money (slightly) if they don't paywall Netflix/Hulu/etc.

Scenario :

Dude has a 360, that he barely plays, maybe he hasn't played a new game on it in over a year. He has a Netflix account.

With a paywalled Netflix, the 360 is most likely going on CL or stuffed in a box or even thrown in the trash.

With a non-paywalled Netflix, the 360 is open as a box to stay on the entertainment center. Being that it's already hooked up and ready to use, dude may spot a game he wants at WalMart or a buddy might come bring a game by that he likes and goes out to purchase for himself, etc.

IOW, I think approximately zero people in the world pay the XBL fee JUST to use Netflix (which they ALSO pay for of course). I guess it's possible there could be something that idiotic out there, but it's pretty freaking stupid as a policy.

This may sound like I'm excoriating MS over it, I'm really not. I don't think it matters much at all. I just don't see how it helps MS in any material way. All it does is give a checkmark to the competition and make it easier to 'early-retire' the system. Hell, if PS3 wasn't a fairly kickass BD player I would have probably closeted it years ago.

Yeah but here's the thing with the XB1 and PS4. NOBODY is buying them for netflix. Nobody pre-ordered it cause they could stream movies.

I think paywalling it sucks but people forking out $500 to be day one adopters already have multiple devices that can do Netflix anyhow in all likelihood.

I appreciated the disc-less feature announced at E3 and then pulled when everybody got up in arms about the 24 hour check-in. Being able to pop in discs to install games and then never having to have the disc in after that and being able to say, "Xbox, play [game]", and have it start immediately? That was a promising feature that's now been lost.

AFAIK, there's nothing stopping you from simply doing exactly that with DD only. Anyone with FIOS/etc that should be as smooth as can be, just queue it up, preload it, and bam ready to play, just like Steam.

So yeah, feature not lost Unless you have no internet, and in that case, LOL. Circular problem, because no internet + 24hr check in = no gaming anyway with the old way.

Agreed, which is why I think overall it's basically a non-issue. It just seems like a stupid move by MS, though. It does them zero good to paywall Netflix, and actually does a little bit of harm. After all, how often does paywalled Netflix come up in discussions. Freaking constantly, even though as you say, everything on planet earth can do Netflix for free (w/Netflix sub of course).

it's basically just a bullet point that people who like to argue about why one is better than the other like to throw around. i know a bunch of people who use netflix and own a 360, and i'd say 1/2 of them use the 360 for netflix and the other half just use something else. they all have xbox live though so it isn't due to the pay wall.

many of the same people who are always whining about being behind a pay wall to watch netflix on 360 but not ps3 were also the same people whing about being behind a pay wall to play online on 360 but not ps3. now the same people suddenly have no problem with paying to play online on ps4, so they now will focus on being behind the pay wall for other apps that are free on ps4.
