MS Office 2003 woes

Hi all.
My problem is if I try to open any office document, word, excel, powerpoint, ect by double clicking the .doc, .xls file nothing happens. I get an hour glass and soon after windows freaks out and I can end task anything and the only way to get out of this is to pull the power and start up again. If I go to programs, office, word and open word from there it works and I can open the doc from the open menu it works. Wht gives?

This happens under any profile I use to log into the box.
I've uninstalled office, rebooted, re-installed office. Still didn;t work. I ran a repair install on Windows XP sp2 and nothing changed. I did a:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /unregserver

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /regserver
And still no go.

Any idea's before I wipe this box clean and start from scratch??

You might download CCleaner and run it. Don't know whether it will make any difference, but might be worth a try. If you don't want the Yahoo toolbar that can get installed with CCleaner, just uncheck a box for that; you'll see it when you start the installation.

Also, is your system clear of spyware/malware? What programs (anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, firewall, etc.) do you normally have running in the background?

Another thought: if you don't have SP2 for Office, you might download it. I believe you can get it by going to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx and clicking on the Check for Updates link on the upper right part of the page.

IU have all the office updates. We are running Trend Micro Office scan and we also have a corporate firewall/anti-virus server that everything goes through. I've cleaned the registry and that doesn't help either.
