I don't know how many people believe in this POS Antivirus, just because they *think* they had no problems with it that makes it good? LOL To everyone running MSE I advice you to run a scan with another AV god knows how many viruses you might be having and not even knowing it

http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/sepoct-2012/

Outstanding result for Bitdefender.
Trend Micro continues to make good progress.
Microsoft disappoints by failing certification.

You alrerady posted this same thread here. That's sufficient.

I don't know why you keep feeling the need to bash it. It does it's job well enough especially when combined with other methods of defence. It is not any worse than many others out there.

I've used it and never had a virus. I even checked with other AVs periodically to double-check. But then, I also take care with what I download/open.

x2, I've never had an issue, and it works great for the majority of people, just watch what you download\click and you wont get malware.

Why do you all defend it like someone from your family has developed it? Take a look at the scores that avast! Free Antivirus or Avira score and judge for yourself.

I don't get it why people get sensitive when someone bashes the AV they are using. Yeah it worked for you? Sure, you never even know what may be lying in your computer

Sad people, really sad, when you insist on using an AV that is inferior to the competition that is also free! avast! Free AV stomps all over MSE

I'm feeling especially pedantic today, so I'll point out that the AV you mentioned aren't free, but gratis. The only free AV I know of is ClamAV :^P

+1..........do you work for the competition or has bashing some av software become your mission in life now op? I don't know how many threads and posts you've made on this. Give us a break, seriously.... I have used all of them and you can get infected on any one of them.

MSE works well for me. Through my work I've seen pretty much every AV product out there pick up stuff that others miss and vice versa. If you read security researchers' reviews of security products based on a selection of threats, you'll notice at in some you'll see (for example) Norton getting a high rating, and at other times you'll see what seem to be completely conflicting results. That's because a researcher will pick say 100 forms of malware versus 10 products, then another researcher picks a different 100 threats.

The only products I'll denounce outright are McAfee's as it doesn't seem to be able to spot that its services have been stopped. That's pretty scary really*. I also saw BitDefender recently say that it was perfectly secure, then when I checked the logs, it turns out that it hadn't been retrieving any updates for six months due to an activation issue. Nice one.

But I'll be sure to sp3ll my w0rds w1th08t v0w3ls in future if that means people might take me more seriously

* - as is another occasion where a customer was running a McAfee security product, and there were McAfee-generated errors in the event log for which McAfee's site basically says "contact our support if you see this", and their phone support person said, "oh, well if you do a full scan then I'm sure it's fine" (the customer just had a large amount of money nicked out of their account and the bank wanted their computer to be checked). I pointed this logic flaw out to him and he didn't have much more to say after that.

I don't use MSE and I'm not trying to defend anything, I'm just tired of your bullshit posts.

And why is it bullshit when it is backed by online tests from a reputable organization? What are your facts? 0 :whiste:

Ok, here's an example. It tests version 1 of MSE from 2010, and I found the PDF here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antivirus_software#cite_note-49
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report25.pdf

Almost all products tested have 90% detection rates or higher. Personally I wouldn't regard this test very highly because I feel product effectiveness depends most on the attack vector - if the vulnerability used achieved say a system-level compromise versus a user-level compromise then I bet those figures would vary massively. It would be impractical to test various attack vectors with a million or more threats in a single test, it would take a long time to set up and test IMHO. I suspect this research involved feeding the AV products a folder of files containing the virus-infected files to see what each product would catch.

I tried however to pick a bit of research that looks reasonably authentic, rather than "we did some tests and we gave each product a score" bollocks that a lot of "reviewers" use, which probably involves a conversation over a few pints.

I'll point out again though that I would not regard a single review of security products, for the reasons I've already described, as gospel. There are too many threats out there and lots of attack vectors to come up with a single definitive review.

Problem with these sort of tests is I've seen different AV win every month etc....also other factors ie speed, memory usage, false positives, frequency of updates etc... also which malware was being tested etc..end of the day there are new viruses and malware out everyday even after these tests.

MSE has had decent ratings if you look at more then just one AV site, also remember if you are running Win8 then you are running an updated improved version of MSE built-in on Win8.

If all you did was post the AV comparison that noted MSE as underperfoming, that wouldn't be a problem.

It's the unsolicited reminders of MSE's shortcomings that you post again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and that's drawing the community's ire.

It's not that we're MSE fanboys. In fact, most of us probably don't have an opinion on it one way or the other.

We just don't like you.

Take the hint: post less.

Well for one it comes installed as default in Windows 8 as windows defender. And second, if I wasn't using MSE, I wouldn't have any anti-virus. Since it is free I use it, otherwise I wouldn't bother. I don't really need anti-virus software and I also don't want an ad-supported version.

And it used to do much better on those AV-comparative websites. Seems to be doing worse on some of them now.

I thought that MSE was an excellent antivirus for many reasons:
-Microsoft has build it:
=> it knows about all the viruses laying around.
=> it knows how to maintain a stable speed without slowing down your pc (due to studies)
...

But if it doesn't catch strong viruses, which antivirus is the best? Bit Defender?

Thank You,
Ara

You are fine with it AraB. Don't listen to this tool MSE is fine. Just don't be stupid and run unknown exes and visit random wacky websites and click on things you don't know.
