MSI 390 - Fan at max speed and can't change...

Hey guys,

So I just built a new rig after several years.

I'm using Windows 7 SP 1.

Installed the card and also the CCC 15.7.1 that was on the disk.

The fans were going full bore and so I thought maybe drivers and went and grabbed the latest Crimson drivers(15.11) and that did nothing.

Tried to use AMD Overdrive and MSI Afterburner to try and adjust the fan speeds but it's still going constant 100%... chip is idling nicely at 35C or so.

So overheating isnt the issue, the main issue for me now is the noise factor, any ideas as to why this thing won't stay quiet? It's supposed to be at 0RPM at 35C

Do you have any other apps installed that can modify fan behavior. Speedfan for instance or something from the motherboard manufacturer?

The only other app I have that can control fans is CorsairLINK to regulate the H110i GTX I have installed, but that does not control the GPU fan from what I can tell. To be safe, I killed the application and it's still the same.

Edit: Just wiped out the hard drive and only reinstalled Windows 7 with SP1 and installed the Crimson 15.11 drivers. Went to Overdrive and had it set to auto and still going full blast - went to manually set the fan to 0% and it's still going...

there should be some BIOS toggle

find it and toggle it to the other side and see if that makes any difference

I think that might be for the 290(X) only? Do not think the 390 has it.

Might be time to try flashing the BIOS on the motherboard (ASUS Maximus VIII Hero).

The BIOS date on this is some time in July, I see there's one from November. Unfortunately all of the notes just say something along the lines of stability improvements - hoping one of those is fan speed adjustments

Faulty card, pinched wire, etc. RMA time.

I just ran through the same thing with a brand new XFX 390 card. Ended up being a faulty card.

Now I'm sitting with my beefy setup on other components - with IGPU :'(

I didn't deal with MSI actually since I just started to build the new system.

I bought the part from Newegg and I dealt with them, aside from the 1hr wait to speak to someone, it wasn't toooooo bad. Just explain the situation and they'll generate a RMA#, label and ship it out to them. Only issue is that they generate a Ground UPS shipping label and i'm from NYC... they're in CA, so it takes awhile.

As for warranty though, I know some cards you NEED to register otherwise instead of the full warranty you only get like 30-90 days.
