MSI 6600GT PCIx

Just got my mobo and vid today from newegg.

within 10 seconds of taking the vid card out of the bag it was clear the HSF is attached like scotch tape, just crap. the pins that hold it in which there are only 2 of, make it imbalanced, and they are not tight to begin with. the HS doesnt touch all the ram chips if at all.

the thermal paste was done ok i guess, but theres hardly any pressure contact, and you have to hang it upside down....if anything goes wrong ill RMA it i guess. dissapointed in MSI

anyone else have this card?

I had an MSI card before and I was pleased with it. Did you RMA it for another MSI or something else. I personally had bad experiences with Sapphire cards, but others swear that they are very good cards. I guess just bad draws.

most geforce6600gtshave only 2 co0nract points. nvidia's reference design was like this. it was one of Anand's's biggest beefs with this card.

it should work though, except when some card's hsf is knocked out of position by shipping.

btw, it's pci-e. pci-x is high end intel server only.(pcix is really just an evolution of pci, pcie is an entirely different slot)

some people have complained about msi 6600gt heatsink to where they fall of
your card should have a retention bar on the back of the card if it doesnt RMA

also edit the topic title it should be MSI 6600GT PCI-E not MSI 6600GT PCIx

I had the same card as you. It overheated to 120 C. Never buying an MSI again. Returned it, paid some extra, and got an Asus 6600 GT pci-e, which is way more quality then most cards. I'm selling it also if interested...almost new in retail box + receit + warranty...

Most of the 6600GT's don't have any form of ram cooling.

I think if you were to use an infrared thermometer to test the temperature of the GDDR3 ram, you would probably find it doesn't get as hot as other ram does.
