MSI 7950 turning on monitor causes all windows+taskbar to shift to other monitor

I'm running win 7x64, in extended display mode. One monitor connected through displayport (DP), and the other one through DVI (DVI) set to primary desktop monitor. If I have windows or the taskbar on monitor DP and turn it off and then back on, monitor DVI goes black for a second and then all of the windows and taskbar are shifted to DVI, with DP showing the desktop.

Turning DVI on or off has no effect on windows or the taskbar, and DP shifts windows regardless of whether or not DVI is on. So it seems like it's just the DP connection that has this problem.

Anyone with experience in this matter?

Wellllp, after a lot of searching, looks like Windows is just terrible with its handling of displayports. So to anyone in the same boat you have two options:

1. Create an Eyefinity group - when the DP monitor is turned on, the windows+taskbar will shift, but the AMD software will move them back. Windows will see one large monitor though, which negatively affects any software used to seeing two separate monitors.

2. Leave the monitors powered on and run these commands (or create shortcuts) that change the idle time when plugged in (use -dc for laptop battery settings):

powercfg.exe -Change -monitor-timeout-ac 1 (turn off after 1 minute idle)

powercfg.exe -Change -monitor-timeout-ac 240 (turn off after 4 hours idle)
