MSI Can not find CD Rom ?? Loads windows then its gone

MSI K7N2 Nvida chipset

I can load windows from Floopy
I can Load windows from CD Drive

Once windows is loaded my CD drives are gone they do not show up Any one know why ??

During Start up Its shows CD rom and Burner Listed

In Bios It shows them listed

In windows they are not there ??
Suggestions any one I have done all I know how to do Thanks MaX

How are those drives jumpered (master/slave settings)? What power supply brand/model are you running your 2800+ on? What do you see in Windows Device Manager, anything unusual (besides a bunch of unidentified hardware)?

I'd start by trying just one of the optical drives at a time, as the master on a cable that no other drives are on. If that doesn't work, try the other drive in the same way. If your power supply is a cheapie, get a good one in the 350W+ range (Antec, Enermax, Sparkle Power, Enlight, Heroichi...). Hope it all comes out in the wash

Do the CD drives show up in Device Manager? Any yellow question marks or other signs?

My 5th computer I am networked with cable Have a 1.5 up and 4M down
This one will become my new gamming computer if I can get all the buggs worked out

For some reason the CD drives are not showing up in Windows ??

They are listed in Bios and start up but no windows

When I load windows they work fine after windows is loaded they are gone ???

Nice rig!

I downloaded the motherboard manual to check it out, and I'm not positive which variant of the K7N2 family you've got. Is yours one of the models that has the IDE RAID controller? Those models have three IDE ports on their surface instead of two. If you've got three IDE ports, make sure your optical drives are not plugged into the bottom IDE port on the motherboard, that one is strictly for hard drives.

If that wasn't the problem, keep reading...

Ok, you have a couple of PCI cards that would be best in PCI slots 2 and 3, if you're using the board's default IRQ mapping as shown on page 2-33 of the manual. The reason is that those two slots don't share their IRQ with any of the other slots. This may not be exactly related to your disappearing-drive problem but still could be a good idea.

If it were me, I'd start by pulling the PCI cards out entirely just to see what happened, however. Use just one optical drive to start with, then the other, and see if Windows sees them.

You got 4 hardrives and 2 optical drives. How can you not be running off the raid channel? You sound like your in the 8th grade by your posts. Someone offers you
help and you don't know about pci slots.

Take everything out not needed to do an install. Just cpu, memory, one hard drive, one optical drive, and video card. Install windows, sp1, then the nforce drivers.

i have sort of the same problem, only.. its my HD on the second channel that disapears, its showing up fine on the boot-post auto search.. and i can see it just fine in the bios, but once it enters windows, its gone


ohh and my mb is a 655 Max

At least 2 PCI slots are used. MaXimuScs what did you think those slots were that you plugged the cards into?

Since you have 6 IDE devices, if your mobo doesn't have an additional IDE controller chip (usually RAID), then you have another controller card in one more PCI slot.

All additional controllers will need a driver (as mechBgon explained). Is there a ? in Device Manager or not?

Is the HD partitioned and formatted? Is this Windows XP?

Try going into device manager and uninstall the primary and secondary controller. Usually under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Then restart and windows should load the drivers again. Try putting the drive on the primary and see if it appears. If it's a new drive using XP go to computer management and click on disk management. See if the drive shows up there.

I figured out how you can have 6 drives on one (dual) controller, poor DWEEB, wanker, scum bag that I am. I still haven't figured out how you used the Audigy and TV card without using any PCI slots. What I was trying to point out though was that mechBgon's (and others') response was reasonable given what you said. I realize some people can't express themselves clearly, but if they abuse people who don't understand them, then I don't care if I am sarcastic either. People have treated you better than you treated them. You don't even try.

If you had put as much energy into clearing up people's uncertainties as in gratuitous, belittling babble, people would have at least known what your situation was.
