MSI GNB Max Report

Last week I was fortunate enough to get a "Granite Bay" board - MSI GNB Max. My P4 2.8 arrived last night (finally) so I thought that some of you guys would like to hear about the board....

The package itself was sweet and had lots of goodies - typical MSI fashion. I was very happy to see RAID drivers on a floppy, lots of boards don't do that for you it seems. My board didn't come with the bluetooth base unit which was a dissapointment, the online info made me think it would.

Setup was pretty straight forward and easy. I was a little anoyed that some capacitors were located near the edge of the board by the PCI slots - this blocked some of the included MSI brackets and forced me to put the audio bracket in the lowest PCI slot. Finished the connections and powered up heading for the BIOS powering my box was a P4 2.8 and dual 512 MB sticks of Corsair XMS 3500.

The BIOS is pretty lame. I was expecting this based on all of the online reviews I had read but still, quite the dissapointment. Almost NO overclocking adjustments of any type. I wasn't even able to set AGP 8x or PCI ratios. CAS values and FSB adjustments were about it.

XP installation went very fast, the thing was blistering fast. I installed the chipset drivers and then used MSI "auto install" to install the remaining drivers. For some odd reason, the auto install neglected to load the USB drivers and I had to do that manually - I wonder why they skipped that? Next I loaded the new ATI catalyst drivers for my Radeon 9700. This is about the time I started seeing problems - random lock ups & reboots. I checked the system event log and saw lots of red...most centered around my HD "...loss of communication"...strange, what's that about? I was using both the onboard Promise RAID and a High Point 1520 SATA RAID card and thought perhaps that was the problem. I disabled the Promise RAID and things seemed to resolve themselves.

Then I put on the MSI "Fuzzy Logic 4" software and the latest version of Sandra. I turned off the box and removed one of the units of RAM - I was currious to see the RAM bench in both dual and single mode. Rebooted and ran Sandra - a very unimpressive 1950 in single channel mode. Replaced the second unit of RAM and rebenched: 3200 @ 133 MHz - HOLY CRAP!

Time to try some overclocking. Using Fuzzy Logic, I was able to get to 147 MHz w/out increasing any voltages. Not bad, 2.8 becomes 3.09 GHz and the click of a button. I rebenched the memory and almost soiled myself - 3750!

I set Sandra to continously loop the burn in and called it a night. Before I left for work this morning, I checked in and things hadn't locked up and the loop was still running.

I'll be happy to keep you guys posted if anyone is interested - let me know what else you'd like to know.

dmhinz - Nice work. Can you tell me if you can lock the AGP/PCI bus using Fuzzy Logic?

I'll check tonight for you.
The manual for the GNB states that you can do set the PCI freq (as well as AGP settings) but, that option was missing in the BIOS - I checked the MSI website and no BIOS update is available as of last night. Hopefully that feature will be in a new BIOS very soon. I do know that Fuzzy Logic 4 had adjustments for voltage as well as AGP but, I didn't have time to play with them last night.

The only params Fuzzy Logic 4 will let me change are FSB, Multiplier & CPU Voltage.

is it me or are there lots of people having problems with RAID on these granite bay boards?

BTW - nice scores!

So, after looping Sandra burn in for nearly 30 hours @ 147 MHz I tried some 3DMark benchmarks. The system crashed right out of the gate :disgust: I am running an ATI 9700 Pro w/ the latest Catalyst drivers.....what's the story here? I dropped the FSB down to 133 and 3DMark ran fine. Upped the FSB to 141 and 3DMark made it about half way through the bench.

I'm pretty disgusted w/ that - obviously the PCI/AGP freqs aren't locked and the current BIOS (2.00) doesn't allow you to set them. I really hope MSI releases a new BIOS soon or this board might be heading to Ebay and I'll be joining everyone else in line for the 8INXP....

Without the agp/pci lock, your Radeon 9700 is going to hate you for funning it out of spec. Hopefully when the new bios updates include the locks, you should be flying over 150FSB!

Providing FSb adjustments in the BIOS without the option to lock the AGP/PCI bus is plain stupid. IF MSI wants to prevent overclocking on this board, they should NOT have provided the user the adjust the FSB.

Couldn't agree more! The thing that irritates me the most is that the lock is decribed in the owners manual but, not available in the BIOS. I wasn't willing to wait on a fix from MSI so I listed the board on Ebay and have already sold it. Unfortunately for me, no one has the 8INXP in stock right now...sigh....it's a cold winter in Granite Bay for me so far....

So today I got a 3.06 with this motherboard, along with 2 sticks of 256 ddr400 Samsung memory. One problem though.

IT DOESN'T BOOT. There's one long beep when I turn it on, indicating that something's up with the memory. I don't understand how people are running pc3500 without any problems and I'm having problems with pc3200. Is there a jumper I have to set?

So frustrating. Thanks for reading.

No, no jumper to set. Make sure the memory is properly seated - all the way down. When you install the DIMMS, push them straight down from the center of the module rather than from each side. Sorry to hear you are having such problems...all that $ and the long wait for GNB...bummer

Nope. No work for me. One thing I noticed was my bios version is 2.2 whereas the website only has 2.0 for download. What is happening? Geez.

No soup for me.
