Hello,
I put together a new machine this weekend. I was a bit nervous, as it had been nearly 3 years since my last one.

MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat Motherboard
Antec Solution Series SL400 400W Power Supply
2 x Corsair VS512MB400C3 512MB DDR400 PC3200 CAS3 Value Select
XFX PVT43AND GeForce 6600 GT AGP 128MB
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor Socket 939

Everything else was leftovers from the last machine.

I'd like to share with you my experience, as it may be helpful to some. I am by no means an expert at putting these things together, as I do it but once every few years. I'll start off by telling you the ending of the story..... Everything worked great.

I was nervous that the power supply would not have enough amps on the 12+ volt rail. I've read so much about the MSI board needing so much power on this 12+ rail. The Antec SL400 PSU has a rating of 24amps on the actual power supply unit, and it powered the whole thing up real nice on the first try. I've not tried to overclock my machine.

Memory: There has been some head scratching about which sockets to put your DDR memory in on the MSI board. My Corsair Value Select memory is double sided. I was able to run them in Dual Channel mode at the full 200MHz(400MHz DDR) by putting them in DIMMS 3 and 4 (green and purple) or by putting them in DIMMS 1 and 2 (green and purple)

CPU: I used the stock heat sink/Fan that came with the retail boxed Athlon64. I highly recommend that you lap the bottem of the heat sink before using it. It had quite a cup to it. I took off quite a bit Aluminum from both ends before the thing finally got flat. Ofcourse, do not do this if you haven't got any thermal grease to interface between the new surface of the heatsink and the CPU.

Thats about it. Power supply works great with this board and the double sided memory easily runs in dual channels at full 400MHz DDR speed.

Me too! I put it in my case and nothing. It would turn on and fans would spin but no post, no boot. Then I started reading the MSI forums. There were several threads that had some good stuff but nothing really close to my problem. So I was going to take it out of the case and try running it on some cardboard. I started taking off the connector and wires and pulled off the 12v 4 pin mobo connector and thought, "Wow, that came off pretty easily." So I put it back on and made sure it was on and tried taking it off again. Then it hit me, that little plug was not completely on. I put everything back on and lo and behold, it booted!

I did an unattened install with XP SP2 slipstreamed along with the nvidia RAID drivers integrated and installed Windows in about 10 minutes.
Instruction for RAID integration can be found here!

My mobo came with BIOS 1.3 and recognized the 3000+ Winchester with no problem. I ordered mine from Staples. Revision 1 of the mobo.

Running RAID 0 on 2 Seagate 200GB SATA drives. Blazing fast.

My board came with the Version 1.3 BIOS as well.

I ordered it from zipzoomfly on 12/14/04

Looks good, I'm putting a similar box together this week when the parts come in.

MSI has put the memory configurations right on the product page on their site:

My TTGI 450W is seriously struggling to run a 3000+ 939 at stock speed. The CPU undervolts by .05v at stock, and my 3.3v rail is dipping as low as 3.09v, which is probably why my memory is struggling to run at stock speeds too.
This is the PS from my old Athlon XP setup where the 5v rail is massively drained while the 12v and 3.3v barely moves.
It is pretty amazing how demands on the power supply changed this much moving from one generation to the next.

I have an X-Connect 500W Power supply for my rig now and I'm experiencing random keyboard/mouse disconnects and the only thing that helps is a complete system reset. Did not do enough research on this power supply, mainly because the word Modular blinded me from anything else. I still would like a nice Modular power supply, as I HATE a messy case. So, after doing some more research I came across the Antec NeoPower power supply.
Antec NeoPower 480W
Has anyone had experience with this Power supply? I know that this Mobo is rather picky on where it gets its power from, and have read that Antec and this board do not get along well.

You only other option of a high quality modular PS is the OCZ Modstream, which is pretty expensive.

My low voltage readings seems to be a problem with the MSI monitoring software on the CD. I updated it to the latest one from MSI's website, and I am getting more sane voltage readings. 3.3v is at 3.25v instead of 3.04v, and 12v is at 11.90v. So it was not my power supply acting up after all.

An added note, has anyone figured out how to monitor the memory voltage on this board? The BIOS has a Vbattery that is close to what the memory voltage should be. Mone of the MSI or nvidia monitoring softwares gets a Vddr reading.

must use modded bios 1.41 to get unlocked hidden bios options. I have not as of yet flashed to modded and i'm currently using 1.41 and it's running great. I'm also using an ultra x connect uv green and i'm getting excellent results

The hidden feature is just shift-F2 alt-F3 right?
And are you using a peltier or something? How is your CPU temp lower than your case temp?

My CPU voltage is even more stable now after I unplugged the 2 case fans from the motherboard, and connected them using a 3 to 4 pin adapter directly to the power supply. These are 2 Panaflo L1As that draw only .1 amps, but seems to be affecting the cpu's core voltage stability a lot.
So advice for those without those new generation power supplies that have more than 20A on the 12 volt rail: Use as few motherboard fan headers as possible.

i also have a very similiar setup and a problem..... my computer is freezing up on startup, and sometimes cannot even make it past the initial msi boot up screen. my powersupply is a turbolink that has 18V on the 12V rail. sometimes when i can get to the bios the voltage is around 11.67 on that rail which is ok i guess. when i swapped ps's with an antec sl 350 that only has 16A on the 12V rail the computer would even fail to post which i thought was even more odd.... im just looking for input here as i have already swapped the cpu, tried a few different ram chips, changed out hdd's, its down to everything but the msi board and the p/s, and im really hoping its the P/s so i have reason to get a new badass one.

res0n0xg, what 12V draining devices do you have connected?
I have 3 7200RPM Western Digital HDs and a GF 6800 unlocked to 16pp 6vp

I have since moved both the CPU fan and NB fan off of the motherboard as well. both fans lose their Cool and Quiet features as a result, but my 12V and CPU voltages are a lot more stable.

It seems like MSI cheaped out on the power regulation, because there is room for a 4 phase power solution on the board, but they only put in components for 3. Also, the capacitators themselves look mighty small and thin. The irony is that the Gigabyte 939 board did implement a full 4 phase power design with huge caps all over the place, yet people complain about voltage instability on that board a lot more.

Wow, you seemed to have spend a lot on other components, might as well get a good power supply too. CompUSA does have a solid 500W modular PS on sale this week, you might want to look into that. With those power hogs, moving some fans around will not do anything for you.

Oh and Antec has a new SL350 out called SL350S that has a 21A 12V rail.

i saw that enermax, it sure is expensive....i got the antec tru 550 for the hell of it.................. and it makes NO DIFFERENCE. something must be up with the damn motherboard as i have swapped out everything except the mobo now and still no change.

It makes no difference if you're running stock speed but if you're overclocking, the rail amperages make a difference, especially the 12V rail. The amperage on the tru550 is weak, 24A on the 12V rail, it should be greater than 30A. I have the tru550 and with certain mobos I get cold boots. Having a beefy power supply eliminates the power supply as variable in overclocking and it will last you through many an upgrade.

Hmmm. I bought an MSI Neo 2 Platinum and an AMD64 3000+ (winchester 939) and I planned to use this power supply:

Enermax Noisetaker EG425P-VE

12V #1 = 18A
12V #2 = 18A
12V total = 29A
5V = 30A
3.3V = 30A

My setup isn't very power hungry. I'm disappointed that this motherboard uses so much power. I'm going to get a kil-a-watt tester and see.

I'm not sure that the MSI Neo 2 Plat uses so much power, but perhaps it does. A check of the amps would tell you.

The Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU is just sweet. Not only is it very quiet compared to my older generic 300W PSU, but its 12V rail runs in 34A. Anyone who claims that this PSU is unstable clearly has recieved a defective one.

I had the antec solution series case with 350W PSu that came with it....I could not OC from stock at all..My 12V rail would drop to 9.9-10.2...i got the fortron source 530W PSU from axion tech for about $60 shipped...the cpu OCed well after that...people were telling me the importance of a good PSU to get the rig stable..I learnt from experience
