Doesn't look like I damaged anything

So did it work out?

Yes it worked.
The only problem is that I didn't have same success with mobile on it like the other guys.
Still cannot make it to 1.55-165V at 10x multiplier - it just hangs.
Works at 1.45V though.
So I'm not sure whether I like this mobo or not
Chaintec VNF3 now looks better but 1:1 memory issue.
BTW MSI K8N takes my memory 2x512MB to 200MHz with no probs

With corecell it was not stable - system will reboot, etc.
I tried clockgen - same problems
In general with mobile A64 this boards look like there are more problems than with vnf3.
Not only I could get it to as high as with vnf3 but it also sometimes will not boot and I have to reset BIOS.
I don't know - will wait for new BIOS.
For now - my choice is VNF

Correction:
I could NOT overclock my mobile A64 on K8N to the same level as on VNF3.
BIOS seems not ready for mobile

Yes low voltage is a problem.
I sometimes can manage a higher value after setting glockgen to 1.55. And it does stick around if I set it then in BIOS to higher (1.65v)
But then after several reboots - it would not boot anymore - have to reset CMOS and start over
In other words something is wrong with this board/BIOS and mobile combination.
I'm going to wait for 1.2 BIOS (if it comes this month) to make final conclusion about this board vs VNF3
I'm waiting to final BIOS for VNF3 with memory 1:1 issue hopefully fixed as well.

They just cannot ship anything ready to use can they?

Wonderful. Just wonderful. What really pisses me off is that thermalright claims compatibility for this combo on their website. Research carefully and still get screwed.

I tossed Thermalright an email about this, we'll see what they have to say about it in a few days.

I received this email (regarding the compatibility of the SLK948U with this mobo):

Dear Shane,

We found that a drop of nail polish remover works wonders on loosen those glued parts without damaging motherboard PCB. Thank you for choosing Thermalright products.

Sincerely,

Jim Wei
Thermalright Inc.

So according to them, instead of yanking that thing off, just use some Acetone. Makes sense.

Good to know. I felt sure solvents would damage the board. However, not as great a risk as brute force IMO. Unfortunately, some genius at SVC sent me the wrong model Thermalright so I'm stuck waiting ...

Just a suggestion (and please feel free to shoot it down), but how about gently heating the glue with a hairdrier? I know this works wonders on peeling off stubborn price tags, etc. Of course, I don't know how strong the glue is and if any kind of direct heat would damage the board. I purchased one of these boards from zzf yesterday, so I would be interested to know.

Also, anyone know anything about when thermalright are releasing the sp-98?!

Thanks,

Paul.

I am thining of using the reatil heatisnk until the SP-98 comes out for it.

I wouldn't hold my breath ... Thermalright used to list the sp-98 on their site, and now it's no longer there.

Also, one of their sales-people told me that that they will be coming out with similar heatsink for the Athlon 64 mobiles. Don't know when, though.

I use a Thermaltake Venus12. And it installed like a breeze too. Faster than the retail AMD heatsink for me.

I'm a first time builder using this board and I haven't been able to get the USB headers to work with anything. Do I have to enable them in BIOS or something? I've tried the D Bracket and the front USB ports of my case and a card reader. None of them are working.

Any thoughts?

Doesn't anybody else use the Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 ? at 21 db, and it cools very well, but I never see anybody with them. They also install easier than even the Intel stock coolers ! I just got 2 refurb (they look like new) from newegg for $13.99 each !

Edit : (first parts for my dual Opteron system)

I think the Zalman is preferable over the Silent Boost. It cools better and people say it's quieter. Although I don't have either so I don't know. But I did run a thread for a few days in Cases and Cooling about that subject and that was the general concensus.

So any of you guys in Canada have it?

Ordered mine from NCIX (based in BC) on Tuesday and it should be here today (providing the tracking info is correct). Great thing about ordering from them is that you can use your online banking and pay them just like you would pay a phone or utility bill.

Did you get your mobo yet?

I ran one with an athlon 64 3200 and i was able to get up to 2.35 gigs but I feelt unconforable with such a high voltage (1.7) so I went down to 1.6v and 2.3 gigs and it worked great. I then switched to water cooling They are really great hs and you can get good ocs

I used the retail fan and heatsink. You dont have to modify anything if you're using the retail fan.. Just install it and you're done. I had no problems.

I am not overclocking the system though....

How noisy/quiet is the retail fan? Compared to say venus 12 or any other coolers?

i am using the retail sink... no installation is required

it not too bad. its noticible when its running @ full speed. if u use corecell it will control the speed based off of temperature.
