End of year clearance @Geeks, FTW!

Being that I was already placing an order at Geeks, and they dropped the price to $38.99, and I have surplus DDR RAM and sockewt 939 CPUs... I bought another one. Geeks offered a second one for $37, but I declined.

I just received mine today. I am planning to put an FX-55 I got on Newegg for $129.

I don't have a PCIe vid card yet, but do I have an AGP X800XT PE that I plan to sell in eBay to help fund the purchase of a $200-250 unit. XT1950 Pro? XT?

It's gonna go into an Antec P180 black case that Outpost sold for $80 a few weeks ago.

I thought I might try and run a few benchmarks on my overclocked Opteron 165. I know next to nothing about benchmarks and what the various things mean. I did try the free version of PCMark05, it is limited in scope unless you buy it. The final results show a list of submitted test results from other users on the web. It lists the CPU, but does not say if it is overclocked or at stock speed. So, it has a 3800+ X2 score 4 places higher than a 4600+ X2, so I assume one is overclocked, one is not?

What are other free benchmark tests you guys like that I can run to see how the Opty does?

Thanks

I got one of these too, and a 165 Opty from Newegg. Running 280HTT right now, gonna push it harder when I get the Typhoon bolted on.

Crappy shipping from the Geeks....one corner of the board is smushed, but it seems to function OK.

I was told by this guy on the street that one could Torrent the full version of PCMark and 3DMark and then you'll gain access to the ability to "loop" the tests (constant stress, you can run it, walk away, come back 3 days later and it's still running)

Now.. I personally do not know the legality of this or where to find the TORRENTZ.COM but I heard you'll need a program called UTORRENT.COM as well.

That's just what some guy on the street told me.... Funny how he knew so much about benchmarking!

Edit: Sandra is a pretty good program too, lots of quick benchmarks. I know Lavalys has that one program (Everest?) but as soon as you run it every 30 seconds it's bugging you to register it so I never looked at it again. Maybe there's a torrent available for it.

Holy Toledo core, what the heck is this torrent thing? man o man, they use a lingo I have no idea about...thanks alot Kenton, I see another solid day of reading to learn something new...I wanna go back to the blissful ignorant days of buying a PC at best buy and doing what the pimple faced kid tells me to do.

True Story from April 2003:
I buy a new AMD PC at best buy with 512MB ram.Inquire about adding another stick of ram. I ask, " Is it difficult to add ram?" Answer, " You better let us do it for a 20.00 fee" ...I did add the ram myself after looking inside the case at something called a motherboard.
I did let them put in a video card, the tech said the bios can be a difficult thing to figure out. Paid 35.00 for the video card install.

Times have changed..............

I went back to that street corner and inquired more about Torrents for you!

The nice man said you need to download uTorrent (utorrent.com), this is your Torrent client. Then you need to got to www.torrentz.com to search for Torrents. (Torrent = small file that tells uTorrent where to download the P2P files)

Once you find a torrent that has good health (look for green, yellow and red are weak and may die) download the torrent and load it up into uTorrent. Then the uTorrent checks the Torrent file you downloaded and loads the downloading locations and starts downloading.

Wow.. All those instructions fit on a napkin!

Board installed w/o a hitch. I had to buy a cheap PCIe card a Staples ($69 AR) to get me up and running. The Live BIOS update thru the MSI site worked great. I've got my X800XT PE up on eBay now:

X800XT PE eBay Auction

Any suggestions on vid card for $200-250?

Got the $10 socket 9393 Sempron 3000+ at TD.
I hope this board can boot up with it.
Preferably that I do not have to slip in another CPU first to update BIOS.

Any other users with Sempron?

Got the X700 pci-e for $49 and 200Gb sata for $52 at geeks too.

Also got free Ultra case and psu free after rebate at Frys.com

A system for $300 complete, that is still upgradable 5 years from now.

Finally got around to building my second computer with this board yesterday. First one has a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego and the second one has the Opteron 165. Only thing I have noticed so far is the Opteron with the stock heat sink runs about 7 degrees cooler than the first one with a Thermaltake aftermarket one. They look very similar....both have 4 heat pipes.

My experience with temps and such is no one really knows what the temp is, since the sensors are often way off. Speedfan often reports my CPU at below room temp, and that is impossible. Maybe mounting your own sensor is the way to go.

One other thing I just noticed. I went ahead and filled all the memory slots with sticks I already had. I had read that this might cause the memory to drop in speed but they all seem to be running at (2.5-3-3-8@200mhz).

Decisions, decisions.... hmmmm.. By the way, which is a better buy between 4000+ or Opteron 165? I won't need the processing power of either, but still want the best bang for the buck. I don't mind spending the extra money for the Opteron. I don't game, but occasional dvd burning and etc. Oh, happy new year everyone!

I built one with a socket 939 Sempron. No problems.

I just installed this motherboard & am using the on-board Realtek AC'97 sound thru my 6.1 Altec Lansing spkrs. Now I am getting annoying buzzing, thumping & pulsating sounds thru all the spkrs that I can't stop. I've tried everything I can think of...Muting all inputs, checking the cables and plugs, upgrading drivers. The noise is audible thru headphones plugged directly into the MB audio outputs (so it's not the spkrs at fault)

For example, a high-pitch buzzing occurs when I move the mouse, a lower freq buzz when my Firefox browser is open...It appears to make different noises related to PC/CPU activity. If I close all apps, it's pretty quiet. Somehow the busier the PC is, the more noise it makes. Is anyone else using the on-board sound?

I had some issues with a skipping problem with the onboard sound. Try updating the audio drivers. I'm now using a Creative sound card. Yours may be a feedback or ground problem, maybe power supply? bad shielding on cable?

I'm using the onboard sound with a Logitech 2.1 speaker system, and it sounds fine. I D/L'ed the drivers right from Realteks site....

Ditto on the onboard sound. Mine works fine as well and I too used the drivers straight from the Realtek site....
