Dell is about the only company screwing over people with this problem, pretty much every other motherboard manufacturer is makeing some kind of restitution, Dell is is just saying too bad so sad, not there problem, if it is out of warranty, then you are out of luck, no fix for you.

Wow this is smoking hot. Has anyone tried to pricematch to staples for an even better deal?

You & me both.
MSI is one of the big players in M/Bs. I suppose a penny saved was a fortune multiplied by all those mutherboards & leaker capacitors...

My abit mobo also developed a bunch of busted and leaked capacitors after a warranty expired. I nearly went crazy trying to figure out wtf is going on with my computer with all the corruption, crc, and memory errors. That is until I opened up my case and noticed swelled up and cracked capacitors. Any Idea where I could order replacement capacitors so someone could soulder them for me?

EDIT: And yes I called ABIT and they basically told me I'm SOL, since my warranty expired.

Yup. I was thinking about getting the MSI K8N Neo SLI, but now I'm a little less likely to do it. Who wants a mobo with potentially leaky capacitors?

AOPEN had the same response.

I worked for a company that used an AOPEN MB and we had a 50% failure rate most do to bad caps.

We just replaced the caps

Large motherboard manufacturers buy capacitors by the millions.

It's not like MSI went down to Capacitors-R-Us and said, "hey, give me
some of those cheap-ass ones that leak after 6 months. They're .001 cents
cheaper per capacitor, right?"

A supplier of capacitors had a quality problem a while back. It hit many of
the major card manufacturers, and not just PC motherboards.

I certainly agree that a good company should stand behind its product and make
good on these bad cards. However, MSI, Abit, and Asus were victims of a bad
capacitor manufacter. They did not intentionally put crappy capacitors on their cards.

Here is an article that discusses this:

Whatever you do, do not read the second paragraph in the link in the original post!

Those were actually Chinese capacitors (the Taiwanese were in fact good). It was a very interesting story: a Taiwanese company engeneer went to China with the electrolyte recipe but apparently not the complete one. The Chinese started making and marketing those, and the result was that many MB companies had problems.

Epox fixed a 8rad+ 2.0 with bad caps I had that was out of warranty for free.

But i threw away a 8rda that had bad caps, because it just was not worth the hassle at the time, it had other physical defects , and i did not want to bother with such a old motherboard.

Ah man. I had 3 MSI boards go bad at that time. I even kept them for a few years but chucked them come moving time.

It still didn't stop me from buying another MSI board 2 years ago. No problems since either.

IIRC, most of the caps that went bad on MSI boards in that era were GSC brand, green with gold stripe.

Just replaced a set on an old MSI board the other day, total cost came to about $$7 since the caps were part of a larger Digikey order. Hardly worth the time to collect as filling out the paperwork and checking up on it will take as long as it did to replace the caps.

I wonder if Giga byte used the same type of parts. I just recently replace my board with an abit after I noticed that the capacitors around the Giga byte board cpu ruptured out the top.

Actually my MSI 6366 that i still have will qualify. I was able to pull the receipt dated from 2002 from the vendor's site so Thanks OP!

Note: i don't expect much from a P3 MB but it always bathered me that a very good system suddenly turned bad for no apparent reason! We'll see what they will do with it!

Going through that many it could simply be that you didn't use any of them for long enough to pop the caps?
