FSB needs to be 133.

It doesn't sound like you have your CPU heatsink set wrong. Trust me, if you did, you'd know it soon enough and it's doubtfull the machine would boot at all...if it did, it would only stay on a few minutes tops. To prove that theory, as soon as you go turn on the machine, go into the BIOS and let it sit for a while. If the BIOS does not lock up and you can arrow around, you don't have a hardware problem.
My recommendation is to remove ALL non-essential PCI components. Also, leave only what you need to load the OS and get it up and running. Have two sticks of ram? only use one...have 2 hard drives? disconnect the 2nd drive....two CDROMS? same thing. Sometimes working backwards once the system is up and running is the best way to find a problem. If you elimate all that stuff, and you still have a problem....as long as the machine is POSTING and trying to load the OS....as stupid as this may sound, try loading something like 2000 or 98 to see if it's an XP problem.

Good luck.

Dumb question but did you reinstall Windows XP? If not your going to have to if you jumped from say
a Via board to the Nforce. Also what memory are you using? Perhaps its set to agressive.

Did you happen to, at least, uninstall the video drivers for the old machine?:frown:

Absolutely. Do a clean install. When you install Windows 2000, Windows XP, and even Windows NT....you cannot change to a different mainboard and expect it to boot normally. Minor components such as PCI cards, processors, memory, etc., and you will be fine. Anyone who has ever had to use Microsoft SYSPREP to prepare Ghost images for NT, 2000 or XP would know this headache for sure. Simply changing the IDE or SCSI controllers of an NT based OS will usually blow it up and that's exactly what you are doing by upgrading.

You should be fine once you clean install XP.

Allright,

First off. You need to be utilizing the MSI Forum

Here: MSI Nforce2 Forum section

Second, you do not have the memory chips all the way in MOST LIKELY. Otherwise you have memory that you are running above its rated spec so check the memory timings in the bios. Make sure that are set a standard or anything but fast.

Third, when using the integrated video the memory cannot operate above 333 even though the board is rated for 400 DDR. Limitation of the video onboard. If you plug a card in then you can run a higher memory no problem.

Utilize the MSI forum. Most of the users here are Asus or EpoX. Abit users use the Abit forum as well.

I haven't used that board, or any Nforce2 for that matter, but have you tried slots1&2? I thought the DC-DDR 128bit controller kicked in when either a combo of 1&2 or 1,2&3 where all populated.

Yes, one in the purple, one in the green, just like the book says for Dual DDR.
I assume your chips are Identical? If not, they'll still work, just not at the dual specs ? say a 128 and a 256.

First of all, MSI questions are welcome here, and people will try to help even if they don't have the same board that you do.

You cannot use the onboard VGA and an add-in AGP card at the same time. The AIW 8500DV will eat the onboard video for lunch, dual-DDR or not, so if you have one, do use it. Another AIW 8500DV owner found these tips helped eliminate a no-video situation: thread. So if your experiments overlapped, maybe that was the real cause of that. Worth a look, anyway.

You should run your memory in sync with the CPU's FSB, even if that means it runs at PC2100 speeds... the overall performance is best that way. In your BIOS, this means going into Advanced Chipset Features and setting Memory Timings to Manual (you can then set the remaining timings to something like 6 2 2 2.0). Hope some of this helps you out.

Yes, I made sure to install the ram while the board was on a flat surface. DIMM slot 3 hangs out a long ways over the end of the second set (& last) set of stand-offs on this M/B. Going to switch it over to 1GB sometime this week and I'll look for something to support the M/B in the case, as it would be a royal pain to R&R.

52-53c are normal temp readings for the msi nforce2 boards
Have only seen as high as 49c, once.
XP 2100+ running 166 FSB @1.6v.
SLK-800 cooler. This is an excellent cooler IMHO.
The temps you mention are probably right. Funny thing, AFAIK this M/B starts from dead-cold at 40c.
However, very fast board!
PS
Doesn't "womenese" look very very similar to "nonsense"
My wife looked this statement over and declared, "Nonsense, there is no such word as 'womenese'".
