I updated my Bios using MSI Live Update 5 (Windows Based). Worked great and was very simple. Live Update tells you what Bios you have and what is available. Simply 1 click of the mouse and it down loads, installs and reboots.

 The manual process is also not difficult.

1. Download latest bios from website
2. Extract the files from the zip file
3. Copy the extracted bios file to the root directory of a USB drive
4. Connect USB drive and enter bios upon startup
5. Go to bios flash section of bios, select the new file and flash

I think the windows version wasn't available for my board, or I couldn't figure it out. And the manual update process was complicated and time consuming. I guess I should have gotten a Dell, dude. :|

Anyone else having the problem with voltages not decreasing while idle? I know others have had the problems with these boards, but just wondering if there is anything to fix it.

I do have all the settings enabled for downclocking and what I thought was supposed to lower voltages, but I am not sure with the new UEFI and MSI (new to MSI language).

No, not having any problems with CPU Voltage. Mine is set to Auto and is 1.00v when idle (1600MHz). Then jumps to 1.22 at load (3400MHz).

I need help understanding this Bios and overclocking.

Question 1)
When I first put this PC together, it ran at 16Gig and 3.3Gig (load). As expected for an i5 2500K. I then decided to try the OC Genie button. That took me to 4.3G. I think turned it off and...

Now my my PC runs at 1.6G and 3.4G (not 3.3). Not sure why. So I go into the bios (overclock section) and ensure the CPU is set to 33. It is. Ratio set to 100. So seems OK. Change it to 34, reboot. Then back to 33. No help. Still runs at 3.4Gig. Can't seem to find out why it is running 100MHz faster than what I set in the bios.

Question 2)
So I decide to play... and set the CPU to 38 (3.8G). reboot and the now the PC runs at 3.8G (idle and load). Speed Stepping is off. Confused. Why would speed stepping turn off when changing the CPU speed. The bios gives me several CPU values, but only the 33 value allows Speed Stepping to work. How do I overclock the Max speed, but still allow the CPU to drop down to 1600MHz when idle?

NOTE: I'm using Control Center to monitor CPU speed. Bios option to overclock via OS is turned off. Bios version 1.9. Board is GD-55.

I would love to go back to Auto with a 4.8GHz overclock, but I am very wary of how many volts will attempt to be run through the board. I guess I am going to have to find out from MSI if this is something that can be fixed. Just strange that with everything set up as enabled that I do not see the voltage drop when idle at 1.6GHz.

I would like to try this also to help you, but as I said... Can't get my board to go back to 1.6G (at idle) when overclocking. I'm so confused with this bios. These seems to be no place to turn Speed Stepping on/off. And any attempt to overclock turns it off.

Maybe I should reset the bios to defaults and try again...

I think after my bigadv WU finishes tomorrow, I will be doing a newest bios flash to 10b6. Going to see if that fixes the problems that I am having right now. I have read a few guides just to see what others have done and maybe one of the ways will work out well. Just crazy to see 1.4V @1.6GHz while idling.D:

When you first O/C the board turns of speed step (C1EST), you just have to go turn it back on, it is in the advanced settings screen not in the overclocking section. I,m running a mild O/C of 4.2ghz and it runs 1.6ghz at idle

And the stock multiplier is 32 not 33, the actual system clock is higher than 100, like 103

THANKS! I would have never guessed that C1EST was the field to change. Will try this tonight. And thanks for the explanation of the system clock. That helps me understand why at default it runs 3.4G (rather than 3.3G).

I just went back to default settings in the bios, and have a new install of Win7 just to try to act like it is completely new.

I am going to work on it tonight and see if I can have a more stable overclock than I had previously. It would run for 6 hours and then BSOD, but I am hoping that is just do to a corrupted Win7 (not sure if it was).

Also I did go back and make sure all the settings were turned on in the BIOS, but since I am back at stock settings I will be more exact on making sure everything is properly set up.

How does this board compare to th Asus P8P67 Pro (3.0)? It seems to have more hardware features. But Asus has the UEFI. Is it pretty much break even? Is there any particular reason to buy one over the other?

Well it seems like the new Win7 install was causing my stability problems at least from the short tests I have been able to run.

I cannot find an C1EST setting; there is an EIST setting in overclock; but no C1EST setting in settings. There is a C1E setting under green power.

I was going from memory, but that sounds right

Just make sure C1E is enabled on the green power screen, and EIST is enable on the overclocking screen. That should allow it to idle at 1.6ghz

They do allow 1.6ghz on idle - i have them set since day one and my processor does idle @ 1.6gh; but no clue about C1EST

I can see the C1E in Green Power. But no EIST in the Overclocking Screen. Can you provide a screen shot of the field you are refering to??
