Amazon has the R9 290 non-reference version for 469.99 + Free shipping.

With all the markup above MSRP this seems like a decent deal, especially since it doesn't have a reference cooler.

Only downfall is its showing as ships within 1 to 2 months, but Amazon usually overestimates the ship date.

This is good for someone who wants a non-reference version at close to MSRP and who wants to stop refreshing to check if a 290 is in stock.

And so it begins....

It is prime eligible so it should ship within a few days, it says it is sold by Amazon.

Ugh... I really want another 290, but these "hot deals" are just silly. Hot deal: pay only slightly over retail!

Guess I'll just have to wait for awhile.

While the retail price on the 290s might be $399, I think it will be a while before we see non-reference 290s ever come close to that mark.

^It's the highest price anybody has charged for a 290 and, above all else, it uses reference cooling - the thing everybody is trying to avoid with 290s.

Makes me glad I decided to dump my 7970GEs for 780s. Would have been even better if I had actually gotten in on that non-reference eVGA 780 for $360 from Amazon (similar "will ship within 1-2 months" type deal).

lite coin mining has driven price up a lot. this card is earning .2 lite coins a day or 1 lite coin in 5 days or 6 coins in a month.

6 coins = 150 usd . the power used in 1 month is about 30-40 usd so it earns 110 a month. thus the high prices.

Really not much of a hassle. Just sign up to a mining pool and run a program. That's pretty much it.
I'd suggest mining something like Dogecoin as its the most profitable at the moment.
You can check http://dustcoin.com/ for which one of the most profitable to mine. It's showing that you'd make about $550 worth of coins in a month with that R9 290. (I'm using 850kh/s @ 500watts as an estimate)

With an 7970 you should get around 700kh/s, so about $480 a month mining Dogecoin.
This changes constantly, depending on the value of the coins and difficulty.

http://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin has a lot of helpful information if needed.

At first MSRP was 399 for the 290, I'm sure with the HUGE demand selling out at that price like crazy 449 or 499 makes sense for them. At first it was most certainly the etailers gouging like crazy though. You can't be mad at them, its supply and demand. Produce a great product with a need sell it for what its worth.

the real thing I was typing is 290 msrp is "NOW" $499
I do wish I had purchased one like smackababy.
I was waiting on the aftermarket coolers and like everyone else never saw this mess coming.

Another way to get a 290 is to get a reference model from shopblt. They do not have any in stock currently, but they will let you order and ship it to in 2-3 weeks when they receive it. Their prices start at just $413-419 for reference model. Then add AIO water cooler and 92mm fan for the VRM's and you've spent less than $500 for a card with superior temperatures and low noise. IMO that's the best way to go. Screw the aftermarket models, the axial fans on them die from the heat way too fast, and they're still way too loud at load compared to AIO coolers.
