Looks like a pretty nice board. I downloaded the manual from the Taiwan site. It has Azalia HD audio, onboard DVI, HDTV out, component out, and S-Video out. Might be the ultimate HTPC motherboard . . .

The RS480 is the "older" chipset, based on .13 micron process.. the RS482 is the revamped, die shrunk version, based on .11 micron process..

Essentially the same motherboard.. or you could call it a newer revision..

I wouldn't call it essentially the same, it has a few features the old one didn't. More like a V2.0.

Hopefully the 'egg gets them in soon, Atacom's shipping is horrible.

It also has the new SB450 southbridge which hopefully should perform better than the questionable SB400.

I own an RS480M2-IL (couldn't be happier) and MSI claim that even it supports dual core with the BIOS update. See the BIOS download page for RS480M2.

The big thing I see about this motherboard is the DVI. I'm putting a quote together right now for a system based around one of these boards.

This board is a promising step forward. I do want an ATI RS482 mobo, but I'm definitely waiting for SB600 to be released and implemented before I jump on that bandwagon. USB performance is important to me. I'll also be requiring SATA 300 at that time.

I have tested it and can confirm both my X2 3800+ and 4200+ run fine.

I wonder if the DVI is HDCP protected? Another issue is that Xpress200 doesn't allow for concurrent analog displays (no TV-out with a monitor connected), and in surroundview mode, my Xpress200 graphics doesn't support the native resolution of my LCD at except for 16 bit color depth. I've been told that it may be possible that a vendor could make "theater Mode" type functionality, so maybe there will be some limited TV-out improvements?

That aside, my RS480 version is a nice stable motherboard. The lack of any real overclocking features makes it a bit less appealing since you have to buy the top CPU for top performance, but its been a very nice, stable platform. I'm not sure that the new chipset addressed any of those issues, but it would certainly be nice since they do keep it "just shy" of being a real nice board.

I just put together a system with the RS482M4-ILD board and it works fine except for the following that I experienced:
1. It did not recognize my OCZ EL 3200 ram - 2 x 512). I stuck in 2 Buffalo sticks and it works fine.
2. The onboard video, although quite decent, occassionaly 'hiccups', i.e. a selected pull-down menu will suddenly flash on and off repeatedly for several seconds.

I've had no system crashes of any kind or any wierd bahaviour (except for the above). I think it's one of the best micro ATX boards around with really good features such as Fireware, DVI, and 4 SATA ports. The onboard HD sound is as good as my old Audigy card. I have the 1.1 version mobo with BIOS version 1.1, and I installed an AMD X2 4200+ with no problems. ATI bundles the mobo drivers with the Catayst drivers. You just need to select the Catalyst package for Radeon based motherboards, which contains the video drivers as well. I only play Unreal Tournament, and the onboard video performs as well as my 9600XT AGP card at 800x600.

I got the board in order to hold off on getting a PCI Express video card, otherwise I would have purchased the DFI Lanparty 939 board that everyone raves about.

I'm glad you posted this. I'm not sure if I get this board now or wait for the SB600 southbridge with SATA2 and such. Decisions, decisions. I think at the least I'll buld my brother's new system using this board. He does zero gaming, so this should be fine. Of course I can't afford an X2 4200+, but I may be able to swing an X2 3800+.

On a related topic, out-of-the-box one of these boards only did a 60 Hz vertical refresh rate on a CMV CT-730D LCD display (1280x1024). However, when I installed the Catalyst Control Centre (latest from ATI, not the version that came on the motherboard CD-ROM) I was able to up this to a respectable 75 Hz.

Those ellipsis may be key. It may be in SurroundView mode that limits the LCD. It may also be a limitation of the Cats.

Mine does 1920x1200 at 60Hz fine (with the option for 75 Hz, but that's not the recommended refresh rate for my LCD). It's interesting that ATI's customer care is totally clueless about the board. They told me that it wouldn't anything over 1600x1200 via DVI. They even told me that none of their video cards would do that high a resolution over DVI. :roll:

This board would be perfect for the HTPC system I'm building but it apprently doesn't bundle the digital audio connector with the board, which is a pretty big lapse IMO.
