Just saw this on Newegg. I'm waiting for Saphire 7970 Ghz to come into stock but this caught my eye.

Yeh no problem. The card I want is still not in stock (7970 GHz vapor X) but I've always had nvidia and figured this time I will try AMD. If it doesn't come back by Monday and this deal is still on I may not have a choice but to get this.

how does this compare to the 7970 OC? It seems a lot more for this thing. I read a comparison and they said driver support for the radeon isnt as good.

I think you could probably sell Borderlands 2 for $20 on ebay so you would save another $18 or so after fees.

It's similar to the 7970 but it trades blows with the 680

It all depends on which camp you fall into, both are good at what they do, the 7970 will OC more but does it really help it in games that its behind in? Not always.

The 7970 models have 3gb as standard. At 1080p either is an excellent choice. Depends if you like overclocking more and do a lot of rendering or computing, go 7970. If you prefer games with physix then nvidia.

What games are you playing that are giving you trouble with the 5870? 2GB is sufficient for 1080P.

I'd say the most important thing you can do is check out how the videocard performs in the games you actually play:

This particular last review even has HD5870 at the end in 3 games against modern GPUs:

Your 5870 is still a pretty fast card, especially if you disable tessellation (that's about the main thing that hurts its performance the most).

The next 2 very demanding games are likely to be Metro Last Light and Crysis 3 and both are launching next year. It's been almost 9 months since HD7970 launched. Since you haven't sold the 5870 yet, you may even ride this generation out until HD8970 series.

Thanks for the post. It was very helpful. I think the most graphically intensive game I'm really playing is BL2. I think I'll do more research and figure out if I really need to upgrade at this point. I appreciate the links.

Ya, and BL2 is demanding because of PhysX and is very CPU limited as well. HD5870 is fine for that game. Not sure you need to upgrade yet if BL2 is the most demanding game you play.
