MSI X99A SLI Plus USB issues...

So... I got this board a while ago to replace a ASRock X99 board and it's been great but there's just been one little quirk that has bugged the crap out of me and it's become even more evident as of late.

The first time I encountered this issue was after installing windows and trying to boot. Everything went well. I started to plug in my USB peripherals and found that it would not boot. After pulling my hair for a while I figured out that it had to be one of the USB peripherals. After some testing, I figured out that it was my Audio Technica AT2020 mic. Once I unplugged this, it would boot up just fine. Now, every time I reboot, I just have to make sure to unplug this and then plug it back in once I'm in windows.

Well... fast forward a few months and I've decided that I want to do crossfire since I've had a R290 sitting here forever. However, I have an Asus Xonar sound card in my PCI-E 1x slot and I had to uninstall it and moved over to external USB sound card and got a soundblaster omni.

And guess what? This stupid sound card is doing the same thing. It's preventing windows from booting and what's worse is that it completely prevents me from booting into windows until I unplug all my USB devices (besides keyboard and mouse).

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to how to fix this? Is this a BIOS setting issue? I just don't understand...

Thanks!

Off the top of my head, check the bios for usb settings. I know Asus boards have a few options about legacy settings. Did you try moving the soundcard to a different usb port? Also make sure you have drivers for 3rd party usb chipsets if your board has any.

I have the same board and the USB 3.0 ports on back panel seem flaky(devices not recognized at all sometimes after windows boot). The 3.0 external headers seem fine. I just use the USB 2.0 ports on I/O for all my always connected devices since they don't need 3.0 (usb headset, mouse, keyboard, xbox 360 controller) and haven't had any problems.

I'll try different ports. I've only tried the USB 3.0 ones. Maybe if I move it to USB 2.0 it might work? I'll try that first. Someone else suggested wiping all drivers and starting from scratch. I may try that if a different port fails. Thanks!

Sorry to say the most prolific issues with MSI boards are USB 3.0 features, its a lottery. Every board I bought had troubles because Im lucky, every other feature is fantastic. I have the same board as you do. Disabling Legacy features in the UEFI can help. My motherboard wants the keyboard and mouse in specific ports to work properly. Both front USB 3.0 header cables, the left ports malfunction with certain peripherals, the right ones are good.

Looks like moving my keyboard to USB 3 and my USB sound card to USB 2.0 fixed the issue... This is nutsos. Thanks!

I know this is pretty necro, but this is STILL an issue, even in 2017. I've had trouble with the last several fast-ring Windows 10 updates, with them (green) blue-screening during install and rolling back. Seeing this post, then remembering that in the past I've had USB 3 issues with this board, all I did was disable Legacy USB in the firrmware, and it worked perfectly the first time. I'll keep an eye on it, but it's amazing to me that such a stupid legacy function could cause so many issues...
