Thinking about getting one of these http://www.amazon.ca/EVGA-Compliant-Multi-Stream-Displayport-200-DP-1301-L1/dp/B00HK8V5KE
Currently I have 2x7970 which has two mini-displayports and a hdmi that I use to power 3x1080p displays. Additionally I have a projector connected via HDMI, so I have to swap the hdmi in and out depending on what I'm using. This is getting to be a bit of a pain and will be more difficult once my new desk is finished. This MST will allow me to use the three monitors on displayport and leave the projector plugged in full time.

which surprised me. Displayport and DVI use different clocks? Why would what the user described cause screen tearing? Given my existing setup with Displayport and HDMI, should I be experiencing the same kind of screen tearing?
Put another way, apart from plugging/unpugging all day long, do these MST devices provide any kind of additional benefit?

I was initially running Eyefinity via two Active Mini DP to DVI adapters and DVI output on the VGA card. However due to the fact that the Display Ports and DVI ports use different clocks there was screen tearing present on the DVI out monitor.
