Damn do people get that giddy over a Black Lotus now? Dude was shaking and screaming. I guess in retrospect it would be nice to still have all of those cards but I really needed all of that money in college.

Hard to tell if he's giddy because he's a dork/collector or because the card's probably worth upwards of $30,000 at the time of pulling it and is the rarest non-promo card from the rarest edition.

Alright, I've heard a lot about MTG so what's special about an alpha black lotus? Is a a super rare card? How much do they go for?

That's awesome. I had no idea an Alpha lotus was worth that much now. To be honest, I never actually owned an Alpha version but did have a few rare Alpha cards. Most of the good ones I had were unlimited if I'm remembering the sets correctly. Hard to believe that game is 20+ years old now.

Alpha is the original set. I'd say ~1993 or so? Black Lotus was rare in that set and also banned pretty early on due to being so OP. That card and a few others haven't been in original print since ~1994-1995. I can't remember the set release dates and really don't want to look it up. Basically whenever 3rd edition came out the Lotus, Mox, Berserk, and maybe a few others were removed from print.

This particular card was listed on Ebay fro $100,000 at one point, if I remember correctly. I don't know if it ever sold for that amount.

It's probably the best condition Black Lotus in existence.

There is one in worse condition than this selling for $38k, one slightly worse signed by the artist for $25k, one in near perfect condition/print for $200k (doubt that will sell, probably for attention)

Most in this condition seem to be at least $20k.

alphas are useless. due to the different rounding of the borders, you cannot play Type1 tournaments with them.

prolly still worth a few bucks though.

you can, you just use a proxy, no one sticks the power 9 in an actual deck they are too valuable

the one that sold for 100k or whatever was a 10 rated Beta lotus, a 10 alpha is basically impossible because of how the rares were packaged in alpha, they were on the front so the cellophane wrapping was touching them which almost always damaged them

Besides that, when I played people would almost exclusively put their deck cards in shaded sleeves that would hide the alpha corners. And believe it or not I knew a high-level DCI dork judge who actually did play with the power 9 (everything but Timetwister I think) in one of his decks. It was some convoluted look-at-me-make-infinity-mana-and-millstone-you-to-death show-off deck that of course would be banned in any format but dudes like him don't care.

When you say "worth upwards of $30,000", how many have been sold for that?

it doesn't matter, alpha cards are not allowed in T1, not with sleeves, not with proxies.

btw; back when we used to sell unlimited edition packs, you could buy a lotus for fifty bucks (and we thought it was too much), or even trade it. i remember trading a mox black for a lord of the pit.

Just wondering how much it would cost to print your own. :hmm:

Couple years old now but I've never seen this. Just imagine, that sealed booster would probably sell for a few grand easy, but he opens it and gets the most valuable MTG card in existence, plus a solid 2nd rare in Tropical Island. Insane pull to get on camera, I would've flipped out too.

On the other hand he probably hasn't seen real life vagina since he came out of one.... I'll take years and years of vagina over the chance of coming upon some rare MTG card any day but that's just me.
