I am going to be getting a new muffler very soon, and want your opinions on what to get. The last thing I want is a loud fart muffler. I want a deep, clean sound. I have looked at Dynomax and Flowmaster. Please, only recommend mufflers, not entire exhaust systems. My car is a 3.1 liter V6, and puts out 160 HP. Also, how much does a place like Monroe charge to install a muffler? One more thing, please include audio files if possible.
Thanks

DynoMax and FlowMaster are both deep tone exhausts... In my experience FlowMaster is a bit more quiet that dynomax, so I would go that one...

As for installation, it would depend if the muffler you got is a direct bolt-on or is welding required... If it's direct bolt-in you can probably just do it yourself... But if you need to weld, then price will vary depending if they need to do some custom piping etc...

I have a DynoMax on my car and it sounds fine. I have heard some not so great things about Flowmaster.

Borla mufflers are supposed to be top notch.

I like Dynomax myself, it's what we use on our race car. We use the race only Dynomax Bullets, but the street UltraFlow welded sound great for street cars.

Yeah I have a Borla muffler on my car... It's really deep, low tone... Doesnt sound annoying at all... The muffler looks stock as well, and I never have any trouble from cops because of the exhaust...

I wonder what kinds of "not so great things" about Flowmaster are being heard out there?

Performance-wise, on a 160hp car, you're not likely to notice any performance difference between any muffler unless someone's got a design so bad it's the equivalent of stuffing a potato up the exhaust pipe. For sound quality, it's hard to say because each engine design is a bit different, and the same muffler will sound totally different on one car vs. another. It's hard to go wrong with Borla, but you'll pay for it, as they're expensive. Three-chamber Flowmasters should give you a distinct sound without attaining "fartpipe" status.

I too am getting a new exhaust. Mine is on the way as we speak. I got a Techtonics Catback Stainless Steel Exhaust w/Borla Muffler. I got a nice price of $415 shipped on this. I have a Jetta III 2.0. Can't wait

AFAIK, GM is the only company to offer a 3.1 V6. If this happens to be the engine you're talking about, stick with the stock exhaust. Unless this is a Camaro/Firebird with the 3.1, you'll need custom exhaust (=expensive) and these engines do not sound good with performance exhaust. My friend has a 3.1L Camaro with a Dynomax kit and I wonder if he should be mixing up the 2 cycle oil when he fills the tank

If you do decide to go for this, you should probably go to a local performance/muffler shop over Monroe/Meineke/Tuffy.

Muffler Man charged me $15 to have my stock muffler taken off(the bolts were heat welded down) and have a muffler i brought to them installed. $55 to get a new muffler and install it. It took about 10 minutes.

I have Flowmaster 2 chamber 3 inch and they sound great. I also have some 3 chamber 2 1/2's on my Jeep and they sound nice as well. I have never heard of any problem with flowmaster muffs.

borla are the shiat but are usually spendy.

a 3.1 V6 isn't going to sound too great with a loud exhaust. I find V6's tend to have a funny sound to them, with the exception of the 3.8L series. I heard a Grand National last night that sounded incredible, and i've heard some grand prix gtp's that sounded like they had a small block under the hood i'd say go for a stock replacement

Well, if you wanna rice like that (ie getting a muffler for performance!?) go buy some insanely big exhaust tips... you generally don't have much, if anything to gain by getting a different muffler other than sound. And that, is rice...

I have a flowmaster series 40 on my truck, sounds really nice. Not abnoxiously loud, like straight pipes, but you can definently hear it, at highway speeds you can't even tell it's not stock.
