I'm looking for a new laptop to do the basics like work and surfing the web but I would also like it to do all multimedia functions so it's basically a desktop replacement.

I want to be able to watch HD, edit videos, hook it up to the TV through HDMI, and all that.

Is the Toshiba P500 good? Looking at the specs, it seems impressive with its i5 processor and blu ray burner. The only thing is that the screen seems like it would be too big at 18". I'm looking for some more around 14-15".

What is more important to you, having a powerful i7 chip or longer battery life? If you can wait until the fixed Sandy Bridge chips come out, they are more efficient than the current i7 chips so you should get better battery life...

if you can't wait, this 15.6" Asus should be a good...It has an i5-460M and a dedicated 1GB Nvidia 425 GPU with a 1920x1080 screen, blu ray drive (read-only) USB 3.0 and Bang and Olufsen speakers which have gotten great reviews all for $979...

I plan on waiting for the new Sandy Bridge one - N53SV-SX1 pretty much same specs (reg DVD RW instead of blu ray) but has a 2630QM Sandy Bridge chip and has 4 memory slots for upto 16GB of DDR3 memory.

Amazon had it for $1049 before they pulled it because of the Cougar Point chipset issue...Hopefully it will be available by the end of the month or early March...

Battery life won't be a strong point for either of these though...probably around 2 hours or so...

Thanks for the advice. I haven't kept up with hardware technologies like I used to.

After reading your post I did a little reading up on Sandy Bridge and it seems like it would be worth it to wait.

That Asus looks pretty sweet. Are there any other laptops like that?

I'm about to give away my Asus G1S, generally speaking the higher end Asus laptops are top notch quality. I've been a little disappointed in their UL line though. The screen resolution is too low.

Both laptops I mentioned have 1920x1080 resolution on 15.6" screen...
