$3.25 + $4.35 for priority mail
link @ cyberguys

I guess this price is only for anyone with a keycode like off one of their magazines. So it's $4.99 otherwise. Sorry.

Not a bad deal for a digital multimeter. Usually the analog ones cost this much, and the digitals are at least $10 higher

If you guys have a Harbor Frieght tools in your area stop by next time you're nearby. They regularly (like every other week) have these same kind of cheap multimeters on sale for $3.99.

Everybody should own one of these; eventually you will need it for something.

It seems the OP is saying it is and was always 4.99 regular, and $3.25 if you have a keycode from their catalog. And I think no mininum purchase.

it's your generic digital multimeter, I got mine for like 15, so ya, nice deal. Never had a problem with mine and it looks exactly like that.

I couldn't find the coupon code either. I did find a 10% code via google, but that was it. Still not a bad price assuming this thing is at least somewhat accurate. My current multimeter is an analog hand-me-down that has such thin leads that I am afraid to use it on 110V cicuits. I got a pretty good poke using it one time. Anyway, thanks OP.

As someone who's used DMM for decades, owns a half-dozen ATM and has one of these, I can tell you they don't get much junkier. Even on an incredibly tight budget you'd be better off finding some $10 special locally or splurging on a $15 meter, though you can get some MUCH better DMM on ebay for a mere $20-30 delivered.

If all you need is a rough estimate of voltage, it'll work ok, but with something like this you can easily justify a few bucks more simply by buying one that takes standard 9V or AA batteries instead.

Can you recommend? I have no idea what to look for in a good DMM.

For a cheap one, just about anything is the next-step-up. There tends to be a correletion of quality to size too. FOr basic lower accuracy voltage readings this meter will do the job, but being small there are the usability, readability, durability issues as well as precision at other measurements.

Prices can go quite high, "good" depends a lot on the budget. For example, Fluke are good but typically in the >$100 range. A local hardware store, or superstore, Radio Shack and Sears have some in the $20 and up range.

THen there's features... far too many variables involved, making it hard to just make a random suggestion like that Protek is usually a good value, or that a Sears 81437 (but not the others) is a rebadged Fluke.

Mainly, in my opinion this meter just cuts too many corners, with a less durable construction and less factory calibration, smaller, shorter lived battery, tiny display and fragile probes. Even ignoring technologies involved the cost limits the amount of raw materials like plastic and probes. Even a low-end model that most professionals would turn their nose up at like this would be worthwhile.

Best value is probably picking up a Protek, aforemendioned Sears, Extech, Greenlee, Fluke, BK, Meterman, et al on ebay... depends on how long you look and the budget in addition to "needed" features.

Ok. No clue about this stuff. I just want to be able to monitor/test my computer PSUs. What should I be looking for to get realistic readings for all the different PSU rails for idle and load on my computer PSU?

Thanks.
