Multiple domains with the same IP behind a router/switch. <<--Fix applied-->

I have a DNS server behind a router/switch.

The IP for this server is tied to many domains.

If I have to use the internal IP to test the default domain, how can I test the other domains?

Thanks,

PS. I know I can access the folders thru the network, but I'm wondering if there is some setting that allows me to check the other domains as if I was outside my network.

This worked for me:

DISABLE DMZ on the router, forward port 80 to the web server (works just like DMZ but only forwards port 80 not all of them). Then you can probably access the sites with www.whatever.com.

I have the SMC router and was using Apache 1.3.14 on Windows 2000, so YMMV.

Wizkid, the problem is that I cannot reach a domain name from inside the network. I have to reach it by its internal IP.

I think what you're refering to is to allow people from the internet to reach my domains, but not for me since I'm behind the browser.

Is that right?

I'm back at it. Had to take a break after getting so frustrated...

Anyway, I have my ports being forwarded, but AFAIK there is no DMZ on Netgear's RT314. So I couldn't do exactly like you suggested.

Besides, on Netgear's FAQs they mention specifically that to access a domain from inside the LAN I'd have to type the machine's internal IP address.

It may be because the router acts as a DNS server as well, so if I type the domain name that's tied to the router, then the router responds. Even if I use www.whatever.com:80, the router pops in asking for name and password.

Do I make any sense? Is there any way out?

I'm also having problems accessing the other domain names from the net now, but I wrote another thread for that.

Is this the wrong router for a multiple domain single IP server?

Well what I did, was made sure the server was available to outside users, then I just edited my local Hosts file to point my domain to the local ip of the webserver.

Your problem lies in the fact that port 80 is likely the only way to configure the router from the inside, unless its possible to change the port on which the router can be configured (the router is likely running a small web server and using port 80). I would assume there is a way to turn this off or some work around. Check the manufactuers site for more details.

Hehe, I love to embarass myself....

Just found out that placing the server as the default IP is the same thing as placing it in the DMZ. Which I had already done when I mentioned that there was no dmz there. Ops!

Regarding the local Host files, which I imagine is the same thing as the local Hosts filters in W2k, I wasn't given the permission to access the properties of my server, even though I was loged as the the administrator... That's what I needed right?

EDIT

I just learned that what I'm looking for is called loopback. A feature that RT314 does not support yet. But I can still test my domains by going thru one of the free proxies and typing in the domain I want to test. Not as fast, but it should work.

I still haven't figured out how to edit the host file though and it seems that even if I manage to edit it, this fix would only work for the main domain. It looks like I bought the wrong router after all.

All home routers ive encountered have had this problem. What you can do to get around it for the inside machine is that for each machine inside the lan (besides the server), search for a file called 'hosts' and open it in notepad. You will probably see something like 'localhost 127.0.0.1' in it. Just add another line for each domain you have to be like 'www.domain.com 192.168.x.x'.

Thanks.

Thanks jmcoreymv,

it does work for different domains!!!

The problem that I had read must be when you have different prefixes on the domain. Like calling it www.domain.com instead of just domain.com. It seems that it only work for the first domain entry on each unique domain.

But I can live fine with that. All I need to do is tighten up my codes a little bit and get rid of any inconsistencies.

Thanks for explaining it again with details. I was trying to change it on the server. Duh!

Now I can relax and enjoy. Since "meet the parents" wasn't that good anyway

You did your good deed for the week!

You can do different prefixes the same way, just open up the hosts file and put in 'prefix.domain.com <local ip to server>'

No wonder networking drives people crazy.

When I tried different prefixes earlier on today I got nowhere, hence my post.

But now, I tried again and everything works just fine.

So I have to thank you one more time jmcoreymv!

Thanks, and thanks for setting me staright over and over.

Just so that you know, the SMC router doesn't need any fixing to get this to work

As long as you use port forwarding and not DMZ then all you have to do is type in www.whatever.com and it will show up. I guess the router detects that you are connecting to the outside ip (even though you are from the inside) and thus does the forwarding, but if you connect to the router's internal ip directly, then the router config page comes up.
