I have a hard time taking anybody serious in govt when they discuss gun control to save peoples lives while selling massive amounts of guns to people around the globe. The United States Govt is the largest exporter of weapons in the world. Obama should start there if he wants to enact gun control. The weapons he sells kill tens of thousands each year.

You make a good point. The US absolutely does need to stop selling weapons worldwide. That doesn't change that the zealotry with which we treat guns here doesn't need to change. We need to start with revoking the NRA's tax exempt status. As a 501(c)(4) a substantial part of their activities cannot be political, and the NRA is almost exclusively a political organization.

Obama was right to speak on gun control in the wake of this mass murder. Unfortunately all he ever does is speak, we don't need words we need action. He hasn't passed a single meaningful control law since he has taken office. Quite sad really.

We need to start with revoking the NRA's tax exempt status. As a 501(c)(4) a substantial part of their activities cannot be political, and the NRA is almost exclusively a political organization.

A great majority of tax exempt groups stick their noses/fingers and bodies into politics. And very little is done about it. Usually because they then cry loudly of charges of bias or favoritism.

It is a very fine line that is easy to step over and many knowing do because of that.

And then the issue is how do you actually draw the line between political and idealism. Each will see the other through a internal bias.

You do understand that SCOTUS judges are appointed for life, right? Obama can't replace any of them unless they retire.

I'm curious how assault weapons bans and universal background checks would have stopped this kid's uncle from giving him a pistol as a present (which is what happened). Once again, I have seen no evidence of him being a felon. I'm not defending his father giving him a handgun but I haven't seen any evidence of him having a felony conviction on his record. Trespassing is a misdemeanor, at least I hope it is in S.C., and he was out on a pending drug charge.

Now, if he was in fact on an SSRI and his father gave him a handgun, IMO, his father should be facing some charges. But from a legal perspective, I don't think there would be any basis for charges. But what do I know about how things work in S.C?

Completely changing gears, I've got to laugh at the DOJ investigating the hate crime angle. Doesn't the nation have better things to do with our money? Roof is the shooter, Roof is going to be punished one way or another. A hate crime charge would do what in the grand scheme of things?

My wife and I laugh at the two minute or longer commercials about these and other drugs. Side effects such as thoughts of suicide, etc. We laugh, but it's not funny. To run commercials of these lengths with the frequency with which they appear means they have to be widely prescribed. If they help people that's one thing, if they're the potential root cause of some of these mass killings it's time to pull them off the market and start an investigation.

Money much better spent than a DOJ investigation whether this was a hate crime.

Assult weapons are allready regulated, just beacause a semi automatic rifle looks like a M-16 or an AK-47 does not mean it functions the same way.

If this boys father gave him a weapon as a present, this should be examined. Usually racism is a learned, I wonder if the apple didn't fall far from the tree in this instance.

Should't be any class of "hate" crimes, they are just crimes, some more serious and brutal that others.

A lot of times it's not the meds doing this, but the people not following the doctors orders on taking them. Some of the time they quit taking them or abuse them. Then there's the fact that they don't see their doctor enough or tell them their true feelings/side effects while on the drug.
