Multiple internet connections (Wireless and LAN) Possible?

I have an HP Pavilion ZE4145 running Windows XP Home. I would like to be able to connect to my desktop PC via a crossover cable and also to have my laptop use my Netgear MA101 USB wireless adapter to connect to the internet. The problem that I have is that whenever I attempt to jump on the net, the computer always wants to use the hard-wired connection (crossover cable) instead of using the wireless connection (which goes to the router and then the net). Any advice? Is this even possible?

Technically yes. But why not just use the wireless network to connect to the desktop PC via the router? Much simpler and cleaner

If that can't be done, basically you have to do the following...make sure the interface with the crossover cable has no default gateway set (on both computers). You will have to set static IP addresses on both computers that are on a different subnet than your router. So if you router is 192.168.100.1, the two computers could have addresses like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. At that point they should be able to talk between themselves over the wire while accessing the network over the wireless connection.
