Hey good on CNN for airing it in it's entirety. The gravity of what the press are facing with the constant attacks is lost on a lot of people. Some put themselves into harms way intentionally as part of their job. Now many of them are being verbally abused just for doing the very basics of their job.

Yeah, I suppose I never took time to think about the consequences our current political culture firestorm has on journalists. They're sort of on the front lines, and with a lot of hyped up and upset partisans out there it must feel like being squeezed in a vice.

People forget why the freedom of the press was enshrined in the Constitution. People attack them for asking questions. They are rude for trying to press for information. They need to sit down and shut up. That is directly against what the founders envisioned as the entire reason for the press existing.

"The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure."

"I am... for freedom of the press, and against all violations of the Constitution to silence by force and not by reason the complaints or criticisms, just or unjust, of our citizens against the conduct of their agents."

Trump and his allies are doing everything they can to make people forget that the press is the only real way the people have of checking their leaders. They don't want anyone to believe anything but what they say. And we are there. That is the world that exists now with Trump's supporters.

Please don't equivocate and purposefully distort. Yes, I'm sure the rhetoric on the left didn't help, but that's one incident and not actually an attempt to instigate violence. Meanwhile, the President of the United States regularly calls the press the "enemy of the people," his supporters shout "lugenpresse" without rebuke, and influential conservatives like Milo explicitly encourage people to gun journalists down.

Let me know when Democratic leaders demonize Republicans to a level that promotes violence and then you can talk. Until then, you will accept the truth: that the provocations to violence are almost exclusively on the right.

This is obviously false. The number of right wing terrorist attacks on Americans dwarfs the number of left wing attacks, by the government's own numbers. While anyone who encouraged violence against Scalise should have to answer for it the fact remains that conservatives are far, far more likely to engage in violent rhetoric and, most importantly, far FAR more likely to actually engage in politically motivated violence.

Terrorism in the US today is primarily a right wing phenomenon. It occurs even more frequently than Islamic terrorism.
