Who the hell would release a dvd in a widescreen letterbox? What's the freaken point. Most dvd players can easly convert a 2.35:1 dvd to letterbox. I felt like watching Armageddon today on my 37" HDTV LCD TV but those idiots at the production studio felt like crippling their own movie. My computer's dvd player fits the 4:3 picture (2.35:1 letterbox) so as to have a little rectangle in the middle of the screen. With my TV's zoom function the movie is just unwatchable.... Frakig idiots

Look for "widescreen letterbox" here I can't find an actual Widescreen verson of this movie anywhere.

It's always looked fine for me =/

Mine just says "Widescreen" at the top..doesn't say letterbox.

When buying a "widescreen" DVD, look for "anamorphic" or "enhanced for widescreen TVs" on the back where it lists the details of the DVD.

If it does not say that, it is letterboxed and will look crappy on a 16:9 set.

This Is what I'm talking about. Armageddon is a widescreen movie but the producers took this widescreen movie and put it in a 4:3 format so when you watch this on a widescreen TV (16:9) the movie looks like retangle with black "bars" all around. I have to use my TV's zoom function to have the side of hte movie touch hte side of my TV. This degrades the quality of the movie.

No. You bought a non-anamorphic letterboxed version.

Read the website I posted above to learn more. Many older DVDs were non-anamorphic and look like crap on widescreen TVs.

Still they need to re-release that Movie in HD widescreen or something when HD-DVD becomes popular. It's a great movie, not watching it ruined my night :'(. Ima go watch Apollo 13 now. If that's not in the correct widescreen I'm going to kill myself.

The OP should be able to see the whole (blue-boxed) area. But since it's letterboxed (red lines) and then "wide aspect" inside that, you get (green lines) the white box.

Right?

Anamorphic movies look good on a widescreen movie, but still, if anyone has a true HDTV whether it's a fixed panel 720P or 1080i like the Sony 34" that I bought, the movie still has to be upconverted. Can't make 480 lines show any "more" info at the higher resolution, or make it look better, even with Faroudja de-interlacing.
Can't wait for HD-DVD or BluRay.

Yes, they need to rerelease it in an anamorphic version. Both currently available versions are non-anamorphic. Probably because the movie is absurd and sucks.

My Region 2 PAL version is Anamorphic. 576 lines of glorious resolution... minus whatever's lost in the 2.35 letterboxing. It is, however, a single-layer flipper disc. I never bother watching the second half, since the movie goes to hell thereabouts anyway.

That figures. Other regions always seem to get better quality releases.

And yes, the movie is awful. In the same category as "The Core."

Over the past week, I've watched Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, & Return of the Jedi on my 2405FPW, all widescreen editions. While the picture quality was fantastic, it is a bit annoying to have black bars top and bottom.

I hate 2.35:1. I'd love it if all movies were shot in 1.85:1. If it's some epic war movie with 10,000 people on screen and vast landscapes then fine, but The Incredibles was in 2.35:1, that's just crazy. Even worse when a drama or comedy uses that frame.

Well dunno about that. Most movies are shown in the theater first which is 2.35:1. They are then converted to fit standard TVs. Maybe 10 years from now we'll see 2.35:1 OLED displays

Movie theater screens can adjust to be any aspect ratio. The movies are show in the OAR which is whatever it was shot in. I'd say it's about 50 - 50, 1.85 vs 2.35. Most blockbuster movies (big budget) are 2.35.
