I just recieved 2 sticks of 512MB DDR PC2100 and I was shocked to see that they had Gold heat spreaders on just like the picture for their more expensive models, there's no indication on the web site that they give you the nice heat spreaders for the cheap $94 ones. Besides that if you want the cheapest unbuffered 512MB, you can't beat $94 with free shipping. Cheapest on pricewatch is $92 with $12 shipping. Comes in handy for the people with the AMD 761 chipset since it only can take 2 slots of unbuffered.

Have you tried Windows XP, I can honestly say even 512MB is not enough, I'm using the final 2600 version on a 1.1 Athlon with 768MB and it feels sluggish compared to ME and 2000, so more ram the better, not that it'll make it a lot faster but XP is more bloat ware to slow things down.

hmm... i'm running XP final on my 550 k6-2 with only 288 megs of pc 100 and 133 ram... i don't see any sluggishness... =P then again ur computer is twice the speed as mine, so you'll probably thing my comp is sluggish =)

512 MB is enough for XP. Watch your system monitor: check it with just Windows XP loaded - write down how much memory is being consumed. Open some of your typical applications, and again, write down the amount of consumed memory. I'm sure your numbers will be awfully close to Windows 2000.

With Windows XP, it also depends on the themes you are running. I've noticed that some of the themes are quite hogs. Then again, this could have been the case with 2000 while running some of the themes from the Plus! pack. With XP, utilize "classic windows" - the performance should feel quite the same as Windows 2000. With XP, your start-ups and shut-downs should be a bit quicker, too.

you can brag to everyone that you got 1.5 gigs of ram for less than $300! Man, a year ago, you could barely get 1/2 gig for that price.

they have the higher priced stuff which is cas 2. I'd rather take my chances with micron ram, I have one 256mb of DDR ram at 166cas 2! (2-2-2 timings)

Yeah,
Maybe it's psychological but it just feels slower, maybe norton antivirus 2002 is slower on xp or something, can't complain though, xp is a better OS than 2000 or ME by far. The liittle extra features such as burning cd's by just dragging it to the drive and automatic slide show for all digicam pictures is a big plus. I also have a digital wallet which is a portable USB harddrive, under 2000 and ME, it was pretty flakey during large transfers over the USB port, it would sometimes crap out on me but with xp, it doesn't do that. The little improvements make this OS worthwhile but I guess, they should of made it like this in the first place.

The mushkin ram is only cas 2.5-3-3 but I'm willing to bet it'll go higher, I'll be making my system in a day or two using an epox 8k7a+ and I'll see how it goes but with the price I paid and the nice heat spreaders, I'll be happy with Cas 2 at normal speed.

Also note that the bigger the module size such as 256 vs 512, the less likely it will overclock better though, you'd have to compare a 256 to a 256 between mushkin and crucial for it to be fair. If you want a guarenteed at cas 2 then mushkin is better but crucial is cheaper and people have good results with it.

Yes I got the basic DDR Ram, not the ECC, I paid $94 each, I'm 100% sure, yeah the picture on their website shows the gold heat spreaders only on the expensive ECC ram but my cheap ones had them too, that's why I think it's a hot deal, because it's the cheapest 512MB with shipping and you get heat spreaders.

Your problem is certainly not memory management. I am running the same build on a PII 400 with 256MB and it runs like a dream. 512MB should be more than enough for pretty much any task.
