I'm upgrading soon to a P4 and an 865PE board (probably the ASUS P4P800) but I really can't decide which memory to get. i'm not going to be overclocking and I've read that that the CAS difference is not that bigga deal, but I want some high quality, reliable memory, just not sure if the 'names' are worth the extra £££.
what would you do with the following options ?

2x 256Mb HiPerf Mushkin CL2, 2-2-2 - £114

2x 256Mb GeIL Ultra CAS 2 6-3-3 1T - £72

2x 256Mb Corsair XMS3200 Platinum 2-3-3-6-T1 - £106

2x 256Mb TwinMOS w/Winbond chips 2.5-3-3-8 - £68

cheers

I'm with Snidy1. Mushkin or Corsair. In the long run it may be less expensive to get the best ram at the beginning. Wish i had gotten the corsair to begin with instead of the pc3200 GeIL ultra that i paid over 230 USD for but won't run at pc 3200 speeds reliably. Vendor won't take it back and GeIL won't respond to my emails. Now i have 1 gig of Corsair xms coming for another 200 USD. would have saved a lot of cash if I hadn't been cheap and gotten the corsair to begin with.

You're getting the more expensive twinmos - I've just built 3 identical systems with NF7 mobos and Twinmos PC2700 CL2.5 (non-winbond) RAM.

I have thoroughly tested 2 of the three systems, and both fail stability tests when run at 'rated' speed. Both regain stability when the FSB is downclocked to 133 MHz.

I haven't tested the third so cannot comment yet. However, I cannot recommend my current sticks - nor the Abit NF7 mobo.

As I understand things, the new high-speed DDR boards are very fussy about RAM, and most have a very short list of recommended sticks - check the compatability list carefully before you buy. In retrospect, I made a simple mistake (the NF7 is listed as compatible with Twinmos ram with winbond - no mention is made of non-winbond ram).

I went with the mushkin black high performance II and am still happy with the performance. Half Life and Counterstrike are a lot more stable than generic. Bought Corsair and system wont boot. Never used Twinmos.
