Again, conflicting stories, so I'll ask the board for help. In the past, I'd just go with Crucial (the chips are stable) but I'm building a machine for speed this time. The board is a ASUS K8T800, and no matter who it is, I'm getting 2 sticks of 512 MB. Thoughts?

As long as you aren't overclocking past the memory chips highest spec'd speed, you're going to have a stable system with respect to any type of memory. Instability to arise from some other component if you're overclocking.

Mushkin PC3500 Level 1 or Kingston Hyperx PC3500 CAS2.
My ASUS K8V does NOT like OCZ PC4200 EL, I had to send it back, it would only run at 200 at timings 2.5-6-6-16, and my Hyperx runs at 215 at 2-3-3-6. The 3200 EL ??? Don't know, but I sure wouldn't try it.

I've always used Crucial for my rigs. I've never had a problem, their prices are decent, the shipping is fast, and their customer service is supposedly excellent (I've never had to deal with them though). I think Crucial and Mushkin are your best bets. Both are supposed to have great customer service if something goes wrong.

Used Mushkin and Crucial in the past (just now jumped on Kingston HyperX) and I'd have to say both are great.

If I were after good and affordable ram I'd most likely go w/ Curical as they usually tend to be a bit cheaper than Mushkin (which is more of a niche player). Any of them, however, would be a great buy.

I'd like to know why you think that... If he's not after OCing (which he doesnt state he is) then Mushkin/OCZ have no advantage over Crucial as all can be had w/ low CAS timings and such.

Plus, there's a reason Crucial is so popular w/ system builders... its relatively cheap and very very stable (and that IS what he posted that he is after).

Well, you are talking about two different types of memory. Let me qualify that statement, when you hear of Mushkin and OCZ you think overclocking and when you hear Crucial you tend to think stable and runs at spec. We are all good in our own right. What you need to do is find out which would be better to achieve the best results. Are you planning on overclocking or running the system at spec? When you say built for speed are you just going to an overall faster system. It is always better to match the FSB to the memory speed for the best compatibility.

Thanks for the mention.

If you plan on running the memory at default spec, I would definitely get the crucial (its guaranteed to work or your money back). If you plan on overclocking I would aim for the OCZ PC3700 GOLD for $269 at newegg (out of stock currently). YMMV with all RAM, I've heard of mushkin level 1 PC3500 not overclocking very far and crucial DDR not overclocking much at all. You can't go wrong with either three, really.
