I have finally gotten everything to run as smoothly as possible with this motherboard. Unfortunately, my Mushking PC2700 512MB DIMM will only run at 133MHz. If I bump the frequency up to 200MHz it crashes my OS. Any ideas as to what the problem is? I've tested the RAM and everything checks out. Runs fine at 133MHz after several benchmarks. System specs are as follows:

Asus P4S8X
Intel P4 2.53GHz
Mushking 512MB PC2700
Antec 1080 430W
Western Digital 120MB
Pine 52X CD-ROM
Pioneer A04
ATi Radeon 9700 Pro
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX

Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW: The RAM settings (with the exception of the frequency) are set to BIOS defaults.

Someone at Asusboards Forums claims to have word from Corsair and Asus that a forthcoming bios release will fix the DDR400 issue.
After talking with someone at Corsair about the issue, I discovered that ASUS has actually identified the problem and had come to Corsair for some assistance and continued testing. A bios patch is definitely needed and will not run the DDR400 STABLY at this time. I have every confidence after speaking with Corsair that ASUS will address the issue probably within the next week and that the Corsair ram they are USING TO DO THE TESTING will also work with the P4S8X. ASUS is usually pretty good about fixing issues as quickly as possible however the bios developer is at some conference until tomorrow (inLA) so they will address it Wednesday and hopefully have some testing done by the end of the week if not the beginning of next week.

Actually, according to many other users on asusboards.com, the P4S8X isn't even stable at DDR333! And besides poor memory performance, there are several other serious issues with the board - that's reported throughout this thread.

Sounds like there's a bunch of people having problems with this board. Thankfully, I have not... yet. I just built my system. Purchased components last week (around sept. 18th) from Comp-U-Plus, Micro-Pro, and my mb and ram from Googlegear. I got my system running out of the box with no updates. I'm not a big overclocker. I won't be overclocking for a couple of years. Here's what I have:

Antec 1080AMB w/ 430W power supply and 4 fans (love the case)
P4 2.4B 533MHz
1 stick of 512MB Corsair XMS2700C2 installed in the first slot
P4S8X w/bios version 1.003A (I didn't need to flash the bios, very nice IMO)
Radeon 9700 Pro (retail, no updates yet)

I have Corsair 2700 and am able to run stable at both 166 (which is the default) and an overclocked 185 (which is the speed available when I overclock the FSB to 149). So some people may be having problems, but the board is certainly able to run some memory at 166 and higher (at least some copies of the board are, at least).

As far as I know, all of the P4S8X boards out there are the same version, but there are a few different versions of the BIOS, so maybe it's just a matter of using the proper BIOS version (and settings)! In any case, there's no denying it's a fully featured board (including Firewire), but apparently, not the best choice for overclocking.

I am thinking about purchasing this MB and just got this reply from ASUS (below). In addition, can one of you tell me if the board comes with the SERIAL hard drive cables and how this works? I don't know much about connecting hard drives in Serial.

Thanks

----------------------------------------------
From ASUS Support:

according to the Spec of SiS 648 North Bridge, P4S8X can only
support non-ECC and Unbuffered DDR memory.
, P4S8X doesn't support DDR 400 memory. It can support DDR
333/266/200 memory, or with another word, PC2700/2100/1600 DDR
memory for sure.
The following table lists the DDR333 memory modules that have
been tested and qualified for use with P4S8X:

Vendor Model Type/Size
Nanya NT5DS16M8AT-6 PC2700/256MB
Samsung K4H280838D-TCB3 PC2700/128MB
Samsung K4H280838D-TCB3 PC2700/256MB
Micron MT8VDDT1664AG-335B1 PC2700/128MB
Micron MT16VDDT3264AG-335B1 PC2700/256M

NOTE:
Please use only the tested and qualified DDR333 DIMMs listed above,
other DDR DIMMs manufactured by other vendors may not be
suitable for this motherboard.

It comes with 2 serial cables. But those will only work with a serial hard drive which I don't think there are any released yet - or at least very few.

There are adapters which allow regular IDE hard drives to plug into the serial connector - but the board doesn't include the adapters.
