I'm possibly going back to school for music. I have not chosen a specific area of study yet. Outside of the top end stuff like The Juilliard School (technically a Conservatory?), Does anyone have suggestions of places I could look into? Places they went to and liked?

Thanks.

Suggested so far:
University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (UWEC)
University of Maryland, College Park.
Belmont University- Nashville
Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh

What do you plan to do with your music degree? Unless it is teach music or go into academic research, could be a less than optimal use of funds/time. If your interests are playing whatever instrument(s) you play now, by all means continue to do so. Don't need to major in music to take the classes, join school orchestra, etc.

Just consider the value of a music degree...might make for a great 4 years but then what? If I'm missing something, would welcome more information. No harm in going back to school, to be sure, but maybe studying something a little more marketable, and perhaps having a minor in music would be a better plan. If you have a second passion besides music (history? economics? business? psychology?) consider that a possible course of study.

I'm sorry but I know way too many people whose music degrees, years in culinary school, etc. basically amount to huge financial burdens and ultimately poor choices. Happiest guy I know wanted to be a chef, but studied business in college while apprenticing at local restaurants, worked for a couple years after college in the financial field and saved enough to start his own restaurant. Does what he likes but realizes real world concerns. Now if you're independently wealthy go for whatever makes you happy...

Already have a degree in software engineering, so I'm not worried about the marketing part.
as for what i want to do with it, I'm not 100% sure yet, and am still working that out.

really all I'm looking for are schools that have good music degrees, but aren't in the top 10 list. i'm not good enough to get into those guys, i've looked into it.

Since I won't be applying until next year, I'm leaving it open ended since i don't know all the options that exist so as to choose the one i feel would best suit me.

like I stated, just music colleges/universities suggestions.

as for the money issue, go read "Your Money or Your Life". I know the burdens of some choices. that being said, i've taken that all into account. like i said, Software engineer, i think about these things. anyway, it's my mistake to make

so got any suggestions jarkykk?

University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (UWEC) has a fantastic jazz program and music education program. Their Jazz I ensemble has been nominated for Grammys in the past.

University of Maryland, College Park. My wife graduated from their music program and it is well regarded. They also have excellent facilities that are basically brand new thanks to a huge donation.

Belmont University here in Nashville is very well known within the music industry, although more for music business than music performance. I did not go there, but I've known several people that have and have really enjoyed it. They do a lot of stuff with the local music industry (which isn't all country music, regardless of what the media says).
