Maybe its just me but it seems to me that music from that time period was incredible. Some of the most talented musicians to ever walk the planet made their marks in the 60's.

Jimi Hendrix
Carlos Santana
Pink Floyd
Return To Forever (Chick Corea)
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Weather Report
Miles Davis

Was it the drugs that made some of these musicians so good, maybe it was the hippies? Whatever it was the music back then was unnaturally good.

you forgot The Doors
The popular music being made today is mostly made by people who are in it for the money. In the 60s you had people making music because they loved making music. There is some incredible music being made today, but it's not being made by the Clear Channel hoes.
I'm 100% with you though, music from the 60's rocked

you can add Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull, Van Morrison, Donnovan, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Jefferson Airplane, Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin, The Beach Boys (yes, "Pet Sounds" is a perennial top 10 album of all time).

That song "Time of the Season" captures the spirit of the sixties quite well. I remember seeing the video for it once on VH1 and it was pretty amazing..

When did electric instruments first start to emerge, I'm thinking this may been the catalyst for all the creativity during the 60's.

I lived through the sixties and can tell you exactly why so many great song writers appeared, social revolution, two very distinct mentalities battled each other during that great decade, the conservatives and the liberals, on one side you had big brother and strict moral values, on the other hand you had a large population of WWII children trying desperately to express there freedom in new and exciting ways.
This was fueled by the Vietnam war, Rock&Roll and the general decline of censorship in the mass media, many terrible as wonderful events occurred that fueled the fire for revolution.

As I see it, singers and song writers came out of the woodwork to voice the concerns about repression by not only the elders of America's society, but also against the U.S. government and there policies regarding freedom of speech and liberty for all.

The sixties were a very turbulent time, African American rights, censorship on TV, the cold war and the battle for nuclear domination all contributed to the distinct separation of both parties.
This caused the Conservatives to staunchly back there own views while the liberals went to the extreme to expand there rights as American citizens.

Unfortunately, there was no effective way to bring this message of freedom to the masses because the media was controlled at the time by the conservatives, therefor the singers and song writers became the vehicle to which to deliver this message of self expression and freedom of the American youth.

There was no middle ground to be taken, you either were for strict moral values or you were not, most of the young people chose to speak out causing a very distinct shift in music and how it was viewed, this in turn brought out the many good song writers out of the woodwork so to speak.

Freedom baby, freedom !

Interesting

I've also noticed that the average music fan from the 60's time period seemed to be a bit more knowledgeable on music than the current TRL crowd of today. For example jazz was much more popular back then than it is now, I can count on one hand the number of my friends who are serious jazz fans. 20-30 years ago according to my uncle jazz artists were as popular as Ja Rule or Limp Bizkit.

the children of the 60s were right in just about everything they stood for - sadly, except for drugs.

I never understood why its not possible for chemist/pharmacists to develop safe recreational drugs. If they can make viagra they should be able to make anything
