I purchased the violin yesterday. It actually wasn't that exact one I showed in the picture, but one very similar by the same guy (did get the same case and the CD of course). I think I need to get it tuned, but it sounds fairly decent. Hopefully I can find someone to give me lessons now.

Oh and it is 4/4 size.

You need to tune it yourself. That's not something you do once, and forget it. The tuning will change over time, and with different atmospheric conditions. Here's a good tuner that'll work with your PC mic...

Look on the web for tuning tips that relate to your specific instrument. The violin I fooled with, you roughed in the tuning with the tunings pegs(PITA), then fine tuned it with bridge tuners.

I was laid off and we had to move. The sax she had went back to the school and now she is with out a. I have a French Horn in good condition, Trombone (with some dings but still plays good) and a Cornet in excellent condition I am willing to trade for a good tenor sax. Probably not the best place to look for instrument trades. If you wanna try and get one here, post over in For Sale/Trade, but make sure to read the sticky at the top. Honestly, you'll probably have better luck posting on your local craigslist or freecycle. Good luck!

I played the trumpet for 18 years. At one point, I was pretty decent. First chair all state band in high school, and I was the only non-music major that qualified for the wind symphony at my alma mater. Which was pretty significant as the school had/has a good music program.

After college though, life caught up with me and I have not picked up a horn in almost 10 years. It's a bit sad. All that effort (and practicing) gone to waste.

Meh, I played the guitar a bit a while back, but nowadays I would barely remember what to do if I picked one up.

Nowadays the only instruments I can play effectively are the Kazoo and rectal trombone. I wonder who else on ATOT is a flatulist?

If you're considering classical violin then I wish you the best of luck.

The violin is an extremely difficult instrument to play even passably well. In most cases classical study is only suitable for children (who have the time to practice and parents to keep them at it) or those pursuing a professional violin career.

Other paths, such as Bluegrass or Celtic fiddling, may be a bit more attainable and rewarding for an adult beginner, but they still require a lot of practice.

Always remember: when you play the violin you're using your muscles in completely new ways. It'll take a while before they can respond the way you want them to.

As far as violins go, the cheapest ones typically don't stay in tune very well. You can have a service guy in a music shop install some finer tuners at the bridge. (better than the standard pegs) Doing this will increase the quality of sound from most $150-200 violins simply by keeping the darn thing in tune.

It may take a good 6 months of playing to get used to it. My father has been playing for about 5 years and my mother-in-law started 4 months ago. If you want to learn, pay for lessons and stick to them. Otherwise, it's hard to stay motivated. Unlike guitar, the violin is a little more difficult to learn because you don't have frets and chords to use as crutches....it takes a lot more work to eek out the notes you want.
