You're missing the point of this ranting and raving. It's not about coming to a deeper understanding of the issues and causes behind terrorism, it's about hating Muslims. For all our cultural advances, when it comes to religion we're still a bunch of idiots trapped in the crusader mindset. There is terrorism all over the world of various stripes, committed by people of many religions, cultures and races. Yet for some reason we're not only focusing almost entirely on Muslim terrorists but also pretending that it makes sense to paint all Muslims with the terrorism brush.
Various Christian groups in Africa are slaughtering each other at a rate that makes bin Laden look like an amateur, but I don't see many people suggest all black people or all Christians are terrorists. Hell, most Americans are pretending what's happening in Africa ISN'T happening in Africa. Remember what happened a decade ago in South Africa? That was terrorism by both sides on a scale at least as massive as what's happening in the Middle East, but how many folks decided that all white people or all black people or all Christians were terrorists? Hell, white South Africans are now treated as equal global partners, even though most of them at least stood silently by while their government did things that would make Saddam squirm. Or how about Ireland? Or any of the other dozens of examples of places where terrorism happens but is either ignored or treated as an isolated incident.
Now to be fair, I suspect a large part of the irrational and fanatic focus on Islamic terrorism has a lot to do with the fact that WE were attacked by Muslim terrorists, while the other groups kept their activities out of our backyard. But I also think a large part of it is that we like having some group to hate. We like to talk about fighting a war on terrorism, but that's boring and mostly consists of intelligence and police forces tracking down small groups of violent fanatics. It's no coincidence that a lot of Americans talk about the war on terrorism in terms of WWII, now THAT was a war you could sink your teeth into, a real clash of civilizations. Even the most diehard conservative realizes that bin Laden and company are not epic enemies on the scale of Hitler, so they jazz it up a little...they turn the careful hunting of a small group of terrorists to a mighty clash of civilizations, with no less than the fate of the entire free world at stake. The fact that this epic conflict is news to the vast majority of the world's Muslims makes no difference, because it's a much better story this way, isn't it?
Of course it would be harmless if the only result was blowhards ranting on the Internet and in the op-ed section of the Wall Street Journal. But that's NOT the only thing going on here. Every time we have some TV special or movie about how the entire Muslim world is going to destroy our civilization, every time some idiot posts a ranting thread like this on a message board, ever time some columnist at the Washington Times suggests we need to treat all Muslims like terrorists, we're validating the bullshit spewed by Osama and his cronies. That's right, jackasses, you're helping the terrorists. By casting this conflict as a war against Islam, we're giving the terrorists the benefit of propaganda that's actually true. If Bill O'Reilly and his ilk are to be believed, the average Muslim in, say, India, had better start practicing duck and cover, cause we're coming to take him out. We don't say that in so many words, but that's clearly the message. So when Osama declares war against the west and claims it's an epic conflict between Islam and the rest of the world, we help him out by suggesting that it's true...and that we already consider all Muslims on Osama's side. We certainly don't do a lot to suggest we want them on OUR side.
