Haven't found any confirmation for the update but someone saw it on CNN

An excerpt::

---

WINTER PARK, Fla. - A Muslim woman has sued the state for suspending her driver's license after she refused to remove her face-covering veil for the photograph.

Sultaana Freeman, 34, said she was allowed to wear her veil, which only reveals her eyes, for her license photo in Illinois and for a Florida license issued in February.

But state officials demanded Freeman pose without her veil in November, following checks of records prompted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Freeman filed suit earlier this month in Orange County.

---

If you'd like to read the whole story, here's the link. So what do you think? Is the law a substantial burden on her religion? How much protection *should* a person get?

BS. The whole point of photographic ID is to get an unobstructed view of the face. Her religion does not put her above the law, nor does it make her "more equal" than everyone else.

The sad thing is that she will probably win...

Muslims are really taking a beating in publicity lately...

Yeah ummm... that's about stupid that they let her take the picture with the veil on in the first place. How can you ID a person by only looking at their eyes?

Identification is used to positively be sure you are who you claim you are... it's not a freaking photo shoot from the mall.

You know what I say, get the FUG OUT if you don't like it!!!!!!

That's the whole point of a photo ID. Imagine going to a store and writing a check. The cashier looks at the driver's license and sees two eyes and a black veil. Looks up, and sees two eyes and a black veil.

"Hey, I guess it's you"

Well-put. Couldn't have put it better myself. Freedom of Religion doesn't put you above the law.

Guess she needs to decide whether she wants to be able to drive, or just walk around practicing her religious faith.

Sorry, not a whole lot of sympathy here.

no sympathy here either. I consider myself one of the more ardent supporters of muslims and their rights on this forum, but this is just ridiculous. Allowing this woman to win the suit would set some dangerous precedents, IMO, that cannot be allowed to be set.

no way.

Yeah, this is like that dude out in BF IDAHO that was a Mormon and was screwing chicks left and right (underage girls, sisters, mothers and daughters) and had about 30 friggen kids. He was married to all of them I think, but he screwed a couple of the chicks while they were underage. He tried to hide under his religion, but they busted his slimeball ass for bigomy and rape.

ROT IN JAIL BIATCH!

If this happened in Canada and it went to court, she would lose. Religion can be an excuse around a law here. But ONLY if the action is considered a fundamental aspect of the religion and only if that religion is considered a major one. The second requirement is met. However, the Hijab (the veil) is not a fundamental aspect of islam. Especially NOT the Hijab that covers everything but the eyes. Many young women at my university voluntarily wear the Hijab - their parents aren't as religious and aren't the ones who made them wear it. But they simply wear the one that covers their hair, not their face. The fact that their are discrepancies in the requirement of wearing the Hijab among various sects of Islam shows it is not a fundamental aspect of that religion.

If she is successful I think that Florida should be removed from the US permanently. GL even if this was a fundamental ground braking aspect of her religion to frickin' bad for her IMO! She can either take the veil off or not drive.

I don't see what the big deal is. In vermont you don't even need to have a photo on your license.

Because it's the law If I say that I believe that camera shots will steal my soul and thus I can't allow a picture taken should I be given a license?

no, this is recockulous. driving is not an inherent right, it is a privilege granted to you by the state. if she doesn't want to remove her veil, she'll just have to do without that privilege. religous should be disregarded when it poses a threat to other citizens.

"Seperation of church and state"
The intention of the constitution was that the church shall not control the government (except in Utah) and the government shall not dictate a religion.

Also, the license is a priviledge not a right.
If you do not wish to abide by the rules, work to change them.

great point.

also i would llike to add that, in light of the fact that every other day i hear news of some rediculous lawsuit, i think we should have some kind of "wasting the world's time" law. this law would send all people who come up with these idiodic lawsuits to jail for wasting everyone's time. but we probably don't have enough jail space for that...

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. If everyone did that, we'd be living in the English colonies right now, paying taxes to the king.

when i heard this on the radio this morning...
i was really torn between which way i would lean
if i were the judge.

after much thought...
i'd have to say... for now, since the law requires a full face picture...
she should be denied.
but i would at the same time push for a motion to find some other
method of identification... besides just face.

If you don't like the laws, they by all means go some place where they'll let you do whatever you want. There are certain things that happen in this country that many people don't like...but they accept it. If a person doesn't like the law and can't except it, ADIOS!

There is a REASON why we have laws like this. If you don't have the common sense to understand that, then no one can help you.

I have little tolerance for Mickey Mouse BS like this. Since I'm taking Business Law right now (ACC407), we have been going over the court procedures, criminal cases, etc, etc. My professor would LOVE to tear this one up. I'm gonna print this out and take it to him today.

Alright, so if a law was passed requiring you to do something... lets say wear a yellow star on your clothes every time you went out in public, for identification, you'd either accept it, or move to brazil? You would be pissed at anyone who challenged the law? I'm glad Washington and Adams didn't think like you.
