Must "Auto-Detect" New HDD Everytime I Do A Cold Boot

I upgraded to a WD 100GB hard drive two days ago. It's the SE flavor, refurbished, from newegg.

My problem, as noted in the Message Title, is that my system doesn't detect the HDD on a cold boot. I must go into the bios and "auto-detect" the drive. That proess takes longer than usual (approximately 17 seconds) before detecting the drive as the Master on IDE 1 and my CD-RW and CD-ROM as the Master and Slave on IDE 2.

Once I do that, I'm good to go and everything runs smoothly. Short of running my system 24/7, what's the "fix" for this?

Manually enter the CHS into the bios and don't let it auto detect. I'd say the BIOS realy needs an update to properly deal you HD. Problem is, Has the MFG supplied it ? I'd send an email to the MB MFG asking for a fix to this issue if they don't have code already posted

I have the latest bios, etc. from MSI but that's a good idea. I'll send an e-mail to MSI's tech support and see what sort of response I get from them.

does your mobo have ata133 support? your drive is most likely ata133 and some motherboards that do not support the ata133 standard will not detect an ata133 drive at all. the epox 8kha+ is was one example, but it was just fixed in a bios patch

wonder if that might be why it was returned

anyway isolate the drive(undo/pullpowerplugs the secondary group of devices) also to make sure its the WD..was having to do that recently when I had acquired/testing a new CDRW..CDRW was making the BIOS...search hard for my 100GB WD(not SE)

since it is a refurburshied drive, it'll also probably be good to go to www.westerndigital.com and download their diagnostic software. I forgot the name, but it will create a bootable floppy that will test every aspect of the drive. That way, you'll know if the drive is functioning okay or if it is your BIOS.

I'm using this exact same drive (western digital 100 gb ) =P
