That's not right... MX player is VERY good and has played many files other things have had problems with for me. XBMC is currently in beta on android so you can try that (have to find the download on their page, it's not in the market). Still, that many problems with that many media players makes me think there's something going on with the files.

After trying out many file managers, I went to a very very basic one. Many file managers are gong through Nero-syndrom, becoming more and more bloated with overlapping features. My choice of file manager is this.

Explorer

As you can guess from the size (370k), it's a bare-bone file manager. Incredibly fast - fastest among what I've tried - and there is no bloat, except handling zip/rar which is a plus.

I've had no issues with mkvs using MX Player.

File Explorer is my file browser of choice, lightweight, open source, it follows the Holo design guidelines and you can set a light or dark theme.

At this point I am not very tolerant of apps that don't at least attempt to follow the Android UI guidelines.

I use Dice for its ability to access a file share over the wifi and it mostly works. Not all videos can be played by the N7 even at 720p, it has a limit on the bit rate and it often struggles with flowing water and lots of moving hair (think shampoo add with flinging hair!). That is just the performance limitations of the platform as it happens in the default video decoder program as well.

I view the differences as mostly the additional features on either how to get the videos or how you control brightness and volume. Dice is good for access but its not so good for brightness and volume control as some of the others. The samba access is the essential killer feature of Dice player.

ES File explorer is also good because it can look at files over wifi on a file share as well. Good for PDF file access and such.

Beyond that I don't use much else other than games (Did you know you can get UPLINK on android? It translates surprisingly well to a tablet!).

For anandtech forum posting I use tapatalk (not the HD version, the HD version is rubbish).
