Must play games from the last 2-3 years?

So due to school/work/life I've missed out on a lot of games the last few years, and I'm looking to hit up Steam for some of those "must-have" titles that I missed in their time. I have a preference for shooters, but there's others I have enjoyed in the past from other genres. I mostly just play the single player campaigns as I'm not quite as skilled as I used to be in my earlier years. Yes, read that as I generally suck at shooters right now, so I don't find it fun to, or want to listen to some 13 year old douche talk trash at me for hours.

Any suggestions out there for games I really should pick up?

Games I have played within the last few years and enjoyed:

Bioshock 1 & 2
Crysis 1, 2, Warhead
Prototype
Red Faction Guerrilla
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops
Battlefield BC2
WoW
Fear 1, 2
StarCraft 2

Games I have been considering:

STALKER series
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 / World at War
Metro 2033
Demigod

Thanks ahead of time

Portal 1 & 2
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 1 (2 is overall better, but the characters, sounds & music were better in the first).

If you have friends - left 4 dead 1 and 2. Random pub games are hit and miss.

Fortress Forever - its a free team fortress modification for the half-life 2 engine.

Borderlands co-op, its a blast with a friend. The vehicles have 2 seats - driver an gunner. So while 1 is driving, the other is blasting the bad guys with a rocket launcher or machine gun.

Metro2033 is a good game, but there are little bugs that made me stop playing. When you have half a dozen werewolf things tearing at you, and all you have is a knife, its no fun.

Brink was just released, it looks promising.

These are the only games out of your list that I actually regretted playing. For some reason on my PC it seemed like the GUI was really inaccurate. Clicking on items in the inventory didn't select them the first time. Shooting enemies took a LOT of shots to kill them. Even though I had high frames per second, it still acted like there was always lag, even on the lowest settings. The games were a waste of time for me, I'm glad I bought them during a steam sale.

Of the list that you are considering, Stalker is the only one I would suggest actually playing. It is one of the only recent games I have played through multiple times.

Mount and Blade: Warband is another suggestion I have. It is probably the only must-play game I can think of from the last 2-3 years.

Metro 2033 was a load of fun, if not pretty hard, I played it on the harder difficulty. Ammo is always short on supply, so buy a shit load of it whenever you can... also, learn to switch weapons, even if you are switching to a shittier weapon, just for ammo conservation.

Mass Effect games def need to be on have to play games...
Only played the Orig STALKER and I loved it...

Other games to suggest

Fallout Series... sure they get some hate, but I had loads of fun on 3 and NV

Dawn of War 1 & 2 are both a lot of fun.. 1 is more RTS where as 2 comes away from the genre a little and offers a fresh insight into what RTS' can be, call it RTS lite, or Action RTS.

Assassins Creed games are fun... 1 can get repetitive but two is awesome.

Second the Metro recommendation, also the first Stalker, Clear Sky was all about faction wars and CoP was all about milking some extra cash from the gamers.

I also liked Mass Effect 2 a lot, I still have to play Fallout games myself.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 -The first and best IMO / World at War
Metro 2033 -Garbage game, play STALKER instead
Demigod

Thanks ahead of time

As with what others have said, L4D2 is great fun with a buddy, TF2 is always fun no matter what. Great support from Valve and always a ton of servers to play on. Sadly, every game I've played in the last few months has been very consoley... there aren't that many that I could say I really enjoyed. You've kind of played all my favorites... hopefully Heart of the Swarm will be out soon...

EDIT, If you haven't played Fallout 3, DEFINITELY play that. One of my all time favorite games. New Vegas was pretty good too, but 3 was my fav.

If you like shooters and don't want to play competitively, you might enjoy an Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT 2004) mod called Invasion Monster Mash RPG. It's played online but instead of fighting other people you combat waves of progressively difficult monsters (with boss monsters that give out extra experience points on the final wave). Ideally the players cooperate and share magic weapons. There are three character types you can choose to play. The server remembers your name and IP address, allowing you to level up your player over time. Some people have accounts they've played with for years.

There's an excellent community with a good server called Clan Death Warrant that must have over 100 maps on it for this game type. (If you click on "Featured Servers" you can see the two Monster Hunt servers.) You can probably find a new copy of UT 2004 (or the Unreal Anthology) pretty inexpensively on eBay or via Steam.

Another vote for Borderlands here  especially if you can get a buddy or two for coop. I have over 160 hours on the game and played three different characters.

Portal 2.
Dead Space (I haven't played the second one yet)

As far as your "considering" list, the only one that I've played is Metro 2033 but I did not enjoy it.

Avoid Demigod. The game itself was quite good, but the code for multiplayer was horrible and it's for the most part a purely multiplayer game. I'm also pretty sure the community is completely dead at this point too. I suggest giving League of Legends a try. Same genre but different style (More heroes less focus on the towns/creeps). Community is big, but not very friendly although it's the most friendly community of the genre...

If you really liked Bioshock and can stand some fairly low level graphics try System Shock 2. It's far better than Bioshock was.

I also really liked Deadspace although you have to force v-sync off outside of the game or the controls will make you feel like a retard worse than even Bioshocks.

Might want to check out Torchlight. Good Diablo style game, and Torchlight 2 will be coming out next month.

+1 for Borderlands - probably most fun I've had with any co-op game.

Also, Dead Space 1/2, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Chronicles of riddick Assult on Dark Athena, and if you didnt play the first one( escape from butcher bay) they re-did the graphics and include it with Dark Athena.

Both are great games and went totally under the radar.

I would also highly recommend Batman AA.

Others already mentioned

dead space 1&2

and

Mass effect 1 & 2

portal

planet vs zombies

mafia2 (if you can find cheap, game is short)
I really enjoy the old environment.

But seriously, how do you find time to play anything else when you've got SC2?
I'm so close to masters I can taste it xD

To add to what's already been posted:

If you like RPGs you really have to try Risen. It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it.

And how many true PC-style RPGs do we get these days?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

Looks like I have a long list to try out now. Just finished Bad Company 2 last night. Game was really good and that Hagard guy's comments were worth the $20 alone lol
