One-line zingers and ad hominem responses are in approximately the same category of offense in my mind. With the rest of the Internet apparently dedicated to making an impression in 140 characters or less, I'd say there's plenty of support for the snappy rejoinder in the world. We, at least, should be able to fully express what we're thinking when we respond to something.

That said, I didn't understand the comment either, so I'd invite cytg111 to say what he was thinking when he mentioned a virtual machine crunching away at a billion objects. As it stands the statement is not of much value.

"That said, I didn't understand the comment either"
- Either ? Who else have laid claim to 'not understanding' the comment? Just you.

It is quite apparent that if you use the technology in a fashion that is not quote "doing it wrong, way wrong", it will work quite nice and as expected. The problem, as i interpret it (and this is on me), is that it so very easy to do it wrong, such that 90% of implementations will be "doing it wrong" on multiple levels. I have personal experience from several larger cooporate (finansial sector) projects, and the powers that be have *always* gotten caught, in at least one of
- performance issues
- memory issues
- bugs, known or not.
which yields hacks upon hacks to 'make it work', come "object cache server", "cut this off, insert sql here", "lazyload when booolean hax = true", etc.
The ONLY persistence framework that I have not been sincerly pissed off at yet is Linq2Sql. Guess why that is? .
Antother angle of the problem, as I see it, is that many ideas of good design comes from a highly academic angle and the software stacks are then mashed into this view to make the academic world correct. In many cases i can see a benefit in turning that around, like

- what tools do we have, what can we build with them?
instead of
- we need to build this, hey, this looks like a hammer (picks up stick).

But again, I am often the guy they call when shit is allready burning.
As a closing statement, I'll semi quote a super cool guy (guess a name?)

- The last 10 years have not yielded anything significant that we couldnt allready do with servlets and stored procs. (that will get me -1000 karmas here, i know...)
