I have yet to be in a beta (I am not in the BF3 beta) that was changed significantly this close to release. The game is basically done. They might tweak a few minor things here and there, but they won't be making any big changes at this point.
They sent a build off to MS and Sony quite awhile ago. What's in the beta now (at least on the consoles) is code that is
at least a month old, and that's assuming DICE/EA didn't do any internal testing of the beta build before shipping it off. My guess is that code is about 6 weeks old, give or take.
Believe me, a lot can change between several weeks ago and late October, and as a software architect and project manager, I see it every day. You'd be amazed at what the final weeks of development do for a product - it's usually the most productive period of any product... by a landslide.
That said, DICE's particular history doesn't leave warm fuzzies at all. They're falling right in to lock-step with BF2's release, 2142's release, BC2's release, etc. This is a pattern they haven't been able to shake for the better part of a decade, and it's tiresome.
Regardless, you don't see that many people burying their heads in the sand saying "it's ok, it's ok, it's ok...". People may have been on the "hype train" at some point, but there are but a few blind followers in the threads around here and people are being pretty objective, which is a lot more than I can about you. Some are withholding judgement due to the fact that, yes, it's a beta, but while it may be a bit optimistic in my book, I'd hardly compare it to the fanboyism that's gone down in this thread. The depths to which you take MW3 criticism personally is almost disturbing.
As for BF3, very few people have issues with the gameplay itself (though Metro is a terrible map by most accounts, however it's starting to grow on people) - the consensus is that game is quite a bit of fun (especially Caspian Border, which many of us have been able to sneak into - it's incredible); it just performs like ass on the Xbox and the ancillary utilities of the PC version are a distraction. Give DICE as the developer, it's not too surprising. Day 1 quality was never their strong suit, and you'll never see me making excuses for it. But the gameplay feels solid, balanced, and tight, and it's what I was looking for in BF3.
At the end of the day, I won't be spending nearly as much money this holiday season as I expected to. MW3 is really MW2.1, and BF3 isn't ready for release on
any platform. The difference being, I'll eventually buy BF3 when everything gets sorted out (which DICE does have a habit of doing)... but I'm not plunking down $60 for MW2.1, nor will I plunk it down for a broken BF3 at release. We all have our opinions, but BF3 has a night/day feel when compared to BF2 and BC2. It feels like a fresh new game. There's just no way that's going to be the case for MW3, and I think we've all agreed on as much.
Of course, I had to buy Gears 3 to get the game I was promised in Gears 2, but at least it's good and will keep me content until DICE/EA gets their shit together . By about the time I'm finished with BF3, MW4 (or 5?) will be coming out and maybe IW will have had a few fresh ideas by then. That's not a jab - I honestly hope so.
