MX Revolution Charging Issues

Everyone,

Well, it seems after years of service, my mx revolution mouse have developed the infamous charging problem where the battery indicator would be green like it was charging followed by the dreaded red blinking battery.

I called logitech and they said its a cradle malfunction but since its out of warranty, no replacement. I have goggled this and a fix was to take cradle apart and add resistors to the charging contacts.

My question is can I just replace the battery? I would need to unscrew and take mouse apart which is easier than other way.

Thoughts....

I see a new mouse in your short-term future. Soldering, if that what it takes to "add resisters" won't be a novices job, but you can likely get it done for a few bucks. Changing the existing battery is even less likely to succeed. These probably aren't good options, my friend.

My Revolution battery has been showing signs of dying cells. A charge last just three days now, where I used to get a week.

I say that Revolution mouse, mouse only since it is out of production, can be had for about $25 USD in flea-bay. Assuming you can get the cradle issue resolved, a (not new) refurbished mouse should set you up.

But, maybe looking at this like a car, a old friend of the family, is logical. When serious things go wrong with my car, I start looking for the best and, of course cheapest alternative, if repair and potential repair is not feasible, then I, like so many, look for a replacement. After all, don't we just hate the idea of throwing good money after bad. (is that how it goes? I forget)

For my possible replacement, currently I'm looking at either Logitech product, the G700 or MX1100. I looked at the R.A.T 9, and while it's cool, it's a bit to involved for my taste. I like spending my tech time on boards, drives and CPU's rather than configuring mice. Ultimately I'm leaning towards the 1100. The G700 and MX1100 run around $80 USD. The R.A.T 9 will set you back more than $100 - but hey, take a look at it, as I say it's cool.

I took out the existing battery and put it back in, according to a youtube video, and the problem seem to have stopped for now. No red charging lights and its been about a mth after. I bought an oem logitech replacement battery just in case at a cheap price(but you said it would not work, oh well).

If this stop gap solution eventually fails, yes I do see a new mouse in my future.

I also have an MX1000 mouse lying around that i can use.

Take the mouse from the cradle and slam it lightly to the desk. Works like a charm. Not kidding you will find lots of results on google with this solution. From what I have read it's not a cradle issue but rather an issue with battery contacts.

Don't forget to use the sledgehammer approach: If it ain't broke, you're not hammering hard enough.

Glad to hear they sent you a new mouse, too bad the Performance MX is such a crappy mouse compared to the Revolution.

My out of warranty Revolution needed to be replaced two weeks ago, and I wasn't going to spend $200 for a mouse - yes that's what Revolutions are going for.

was your mouse defective due to charging issue or something else? You should try the battery removal and see if that works.

no comment on the performance MX mouse. Great they replaced it, jlazzaro.

I don't really like the mx1100, i got one for my laptop when they were on sale christmas for cheap. It is definetly more office grade than the mx revolution, it feels and looks cheaper in person. even the wheel is loosy goosy in a bad way, and it is more hulking in a bad way. no charger either. worst bit was that it seems a batch of them had bad wheels, unbalanced wheel+ free wheeling = a wheel that rolls back by itself after you let go.. the other one i bought as a gift also had the unbalanced wheel...quality control fail.

I like my g9 though, auto profile switching means the number of mouse buttons matters less, specify different function for each program. no charging worries either. these days logitech drivers are good enough that you can have two hooked up without conflict. g9 wheel is the most tight of the bunch, no slop, but it takes more pressure to push as a button, i'm ok with that.
