With the current deal at tiger direct I can get a mx100 for about $85 for the 250gb or the 840 evo for $125. Which one would you get. In Tom's Hardware benchmarks the 840 writes much faster, but will that matter for mostly an OS boot drive?

What deal? I have been looking for a deal on the MX100 for about 2 weeks now and I have seen it as low as $99 shipped at Amazon but now it is hovering around $109 everywhere.

I need to pick up six of these drives and would love to do so for $85!

Also, to answer your question... only in benchmarking will you really notice the difference. Most everyone agrees that over 300 write speeds, in day to day use, you won't notice the difference. If you are doing something that writes a lot, for work, then maybe you will notice. Otherwise, go with what you are comfortable paying for...

I know its not what you asked, but the Intel 730 is $109 right now for 240GB. I think the intel 730 is supposed to be on par with the 840 Evo but don't quote me on that, I could be wrong.

That said, the 840 Evo was a black friday staple last year (was on all the deal sites) and I expect it to be the same this year. I haven't seen a sale on it yet this week so my hunch is that newegg is saving that one for friday. Or I could be overthinking it.

I don't have confidence in the EVO with the recent firmware upgrade for the malfunctioning units, but maybe I'm overly cautious.

Tigerdirects black friday ad on the deal sites lists the M500 250GB as being $89 on friday. Not quite $100 for the $25 off but maybe you could add some filler and get it for $75.

Not sure what the difference between the MX100 and the M500 is though.

MX100 256gb or 512gb is a solid choice.
Evo seems to have gained a not so great reputation

got the mx100 for $85. Mostly read. The tests I saw in read operations they were pretty close. Write had a good deal of difference though.

Both solid brands. Crucial charges less for MLC and they're both on a similar process(before VNand). Unless you write a lot across drives, performance shouldn't matter.

+1 Crucial

As I've already stated in previous posts, the 840 evo is a good drive but samsung rips consumers off with the high pricing. The price of the evos needs to go down a lot. At current price levels, the evos are not worthy. I'm very excited about intel's 3d nand. Samsung deserves a good spanking for keeping the prices this high. TLC was supposed to be cheap and it is, but instead they charge a lot more than pure MLC. They will probably treat consumers the same with the current v-nand products. I can't wait for intel to step into the 3d nand territory and spank them(samsung) hard as they deserve.

"seems to have gained a not so great reputation" ?

There was a firmware bug. Samsung fixed it. Take the FUD elsewhere.
This is no FUD. I am not getting near a Samsung TLC SSD again, so add +1 to those that consider the 840 EVO not-so-reputable.

Samsung had been denying the problem existed for months, and now denies the problem exists for the vanilla 840, when there are tons of reports about the opposite. Meaning, any poor soul that got the vanilla 840 is stuck with it in that state.

Finally, MX100 uses MLC Nand, so this is a no-brainer for me. It being cheaper is just the icing on the cake.

The Samsung Pro SSDs though are pretty awesome.

After owning 3 TLC 840 EVO 1TB SSDs, one of them which is an mSATA, I'd never ever buy a TLC SSD again. It's good in benchmarks, but in real world performance, even my older 840 PRO gave me better speeds, stuff like copying files, opening programs, etc. I could feel it big time.

Now when the finally awaited fix from SAMSUNG came, I quickly jumped on it, upgraded the firmware, and let it do the performance restoration. Yes, that did help, but after about 1 month, I started noticing the same slow down again.

I then sold my two 1 TB 840 EVOs and substituted them with 850 PROs.

Morale of the story: stick to MLC (in this case, the MX100)
