MX1000 needs an AC adaptor?

Forgive me ignorance but I figured the idea of a wireless mouse was to reduce the amount of wires on the desk.

So why then does the MX1000 have an AC adaptor included in the box? does the dock need to be connected to the mains the whole time?

Of course it does....being a wireless mouse doesn't mean both the mouse and dock run off batteries. Just put the dock and its associated wiring in a discreet location on your desk.

wireless addsone more wire in the back of your computer desk (1 usb 1 ac adapter), but it allows the mouse to move freely, hence why its a 'wireless mouse' since there are no cords attached to the actual mouse.

The point of a wireless mouse is to not have wires physically attached to the mouse to allow a greater degree of freedom of movement. You obviously have to have power going to and data coming from the base station. The mouse has to be recharged, and the base station has to get the data to the computer some way! Wireless mice with dongles (think Logitech V500) have no wires, since the receiver is just a USB dongle. However, you can't recharge them, as they use alkaline batteries as opposed to Li-Ion like in the MX 700, 900, and 1000.
