Gee, MDCRAB you have better luck than I did. I started a topic on this mouse and everyone insulted me personally and then the MOD locked the topic with no explanation. I guess I didn't kiss the right buttocks when I got up that morning.

I remember seeing that, and could never figure out why it was locked.

It was a good thread.

OK - I bought one to upgrade from a logitech mouseman optical cordless(1st gen optical cordless mouse) and I gotta say this thing is very smooth - for $40 I like it

They are BOTH 800dpi. The scanning rate is based upon how fast you can move the mouse without it skipping.

The MX510 runs at 800dpi natively, but unless they changed it in recent drivers, you have to do some registry hacking to get an MX500 to run at 800dpi. They boast how it's able to, but it won't run that way unless you make it so.

They BOTH run at 800dpi. Buy the mx510 if you feel like its better. I dont care which you buy but dont buy the mx510 thinking its ANY better than the mx500.

It's been mine and several other people's experience that the logitech mx series of mice run at 400 dpi natively, and have the ablility to run at 800, but it has to be set in the windows registry. Maybe some of the newer drivers adjusted that. From what I've heard, the mx510 is the first logitech mouse to be 800dpi out of the box.

The mouse ships with software release 9.80 and the manual for the mx500. However on the logitech wesite they state that the software which is included (mouseware version 9.80) is to be used exclusively for the mx510 (all other mice are supposed to use version 9.79). This software may very well contain a registry hack. (9.80 can also be downloaded from the logitech website. I personally do not think that there is a difference in hardware between mx500 and mx510 - they are just too similar and the 510 is made in such small quantities it would not make sense. However using mouseware 9.80 may enable the higher framerates and thus may very well convert an ordinary mx500 to an mx510.

FYI(don't blame me if it screws your mouse up or doesn't work, I don't have a MX mouse to test with)

Logitech MX acceleration fix:

Change the following settings in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse":

->delete the string value "MouseSensitivity"
->set "MouseSpeed" to "0"
->set "MouseThreshold1" to "0"
->set "MouseThreshold2" to "0"

Change the following settings in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LMouFlt2\Parameters\OpticalMouse11\0000"

->set "Acceleration" to "Off"
->set "MouseSpeedX" to "200"
->set "MouseSpeedY" to "200"
->set "Resolution" to "8"

Now you have 800dpi and no negative acceleration. Have fun.

so what's negative acceleration, I've seen it mentionned a couple of times on this thread.

Also, what would be a good mousing surface for this mouse? (I've got C4 on order from another thread but still open to other solutions)

from what i've read its something where the cursor doesn't keep up with extremely flick happy users. less likely to happen with mx510 ofcourse. i've never experienced this neg accel thing.

For those of you that got one, can you got the buttons around the wheel to work in games? I can't seem to get UT004 (demo) to recognize those buttons. If I can't maybe I'll return it, I mostly bought i for more buttons.

set the buttons to keys. you can choose keystroke in the setup window thing. then any key can be applied. i set the mouse wheel as middle button for when i press it...works with firefox tabs etc. as for the wheel, works for all games i've tried from 1942, ut4k demo, cod vietnam etc. for instance i set the buttons above and below the wheel to end/home. games don't know the difference.... did u even install the software? did u read the manual? bah did u bother uninstalling ur old mouse software?

and a program that lets u have different key assignments for different games, auto detect. http://www.geocities.com/gpkgpk13/

only downside seems to be that I loose the wheel when I use my KVM (i.e. when I switch from on machine to the other and then back, the wheel function does not work anymore unless I reboot)

I bought one, but am returning it. I already have a mx500 and I can't tell the difference between the two.

I keep wanting to get one of these, but I'm hesitant because I use a KVM (belkin). The kvm only lets me use default mouse drivers, so no "mouseware" or any of that stuff. How does this thing work on default windows drivers...can you program the extra buttons in windows?

I may wind up getting this or a MX500 anyway...my trackball is starting to get a little long in the tooth.

My MX500 works great on default windows drivers. I actually prefer it because in Counter-Strike, if I use the mouseware, I can't use my mouse4 and mouse5 buttons...I'm not sure if I'm the only one who has had this problem, but I have seen no gain in using the mouseware.

if you dont use mouseware dont you lose the features of the mouse4/5 buttons (back page, forward a page) and the cruise buttons when you are web browsing? i love these things, make my ATOT experience much more enjoyable

First of all, sorry for my english.

I have an MX500. I prefer not to install mouseware because when I install it, while playing CS I notice a negative accel. (for those who dont know what is negative accel: try to rotate your mouse 360 degree, first slowly then faster... faster you rotate the mouse, the movement get slower) Because of that I use my mouse without driver.

Some says the MX 510 doesn't have this negative accel bug because of the improvements. Is this true? Did anyone test it?

How would this compare to the blue tooth version of this mouse? I need to get a new mouse for the gamers in my house and the wireless intellimouse explorer I have is jerky in some games. I prefer wireless but, performance is higher on my requirements.

Thanks
