My 11 yo will not stop bugging me about Beatz headphones

He already has some decent entry level Sennheisers but all his friends talk about Beatz. I will not waste money on them so I am wondering how are the knock off's in comparison? does anyone here have a set?

Don't know a thing about Beatz, but I won't support trend following. Assuming Beatz are hype, explain that they're hype, and tell him not to be a follower. If they actually are good, then a knockoff won't do. You'd be buying into the worst situation. Lowest quality junk that appears to be low quality junk, which will be dissatisfying to your son.

I am pretty sick of Beats branded crap. My laptop has "Beats by Dre" speakers and some sound profile program, my phone has "Beats Audio". I can tell you that these things do not sound very good, at all.

I have an HP Envy and a Droid DNA for those curious. Also, no, I did not buy these for audio quality.

My hp envy 15 beats edition laptop is a scam.
It's nothing but Windows EQ settings. It turns the bass up to max, and if you turn it off, it turns it down to minimum, -14, while turning the treble up to max!

You can manually adjust it back in windows sound settings.

I always hated having friends that had all the latest gadgets, it seemed like their parents bought them everything. I was lucky if I got 2 things off of my Christmas list.

Back when everyone was getting their first cellphones, my mom was still giving me quarters to use payphones or told me to go to the office if I needed to call. I was 15 when I got my first cellphone....everyone else was on their second or third.

Back then it was the Motorola Razr that was hot and everyone had one. I had some shitty non-flip phone.

Hmm, I was thinking that Beats was actually disassociating with Dre and were actually improving and had promised to continue. Much like Skullcandy. I know they've had some turmoil, they bought back the shares that one of the big partners (maybe it was HTC or HP?) and said they were going to go back to focusing on headphones.

OP, see if your son will go for some V-Moda's instead. I'm assuming you're wanting to cheap out a bit and not spend the $300 on Beats? If you're not wanting to cheap out V-Moda and Sennheiser both just came out with new headphones in that price range that are both supposed to be quite good (the V-Modas more basshead). V-Moda has a cheaper model that's pretty good as well. Sony has some unique looking headphones that should offer up the Beats type of sound but be a lot cheaper (the XB500 and XB700).

There's actually quite a few pretty solid choices, but I know its not so much about the sound.

That's certainly not the end all be all, but check current prices (Amazon is usually pretty good but sometimes other places run sales on certain headphones), and then see if he likes any of the ones within the budget you're thinking of. Been a while since I paid any attention so there might be some new ones too.

Lol, this is just one of those things that I would outright refuse regardless of the begging. I'm a pretty lenient person, but I can't see supporting blatant ignorance in an attempt to be cool. They have inferior sound quality in that price range, so they certainly wouldn't be worth that money. $100 puts you in Ultrasone 900 territory which is an immense improvement when it comes to bass-forward cans. There's just no point to the Beats.

You could also teach him not to be a dumbass who buys things solely based on trend. Getting Beats due to popularity at this point is laughable. Shit, I'd make fun of him, be like "yeah you're about 3 years too late to wear Beats for any cool factor".

I just looked it up, actually they broke off from Monster and are now they're own company. Monster actually made some good quality headphones, although I don't know if any of the Beats ones can claim that. The Turbines were pretty good (especially since you could get the ones with like $300+ MSRP for like $150).

I believe some actually measured better than the official ones, but it'll be a total crapshoot and don't be surprised to get something really bad. Of course I believe some of the actual Beats have build quality issues (I recall that I think the hinges on one of them were prone to failing).

You could be a cool dad and buy some knockoffs and transplant some better drivers in. Do some little thing to add some personalization and then let him gloat that he got some extra special edition ones that both sound better and are custom for him. Maybe get them sent to Colorware or one of those places and give it a custom paint job to stand out.
