how is that possible??? I think they'll starve to death if I followed the instruction.

unless i am reading the instruction wrong. but it clearly shows a chart, and for a 6 lb cat, feed ~1/2 cup a day out of the 8oz cup.

so far i been free pouring and i am going through a 4lb bag ~ every 2 weeks for 2 cats of almost same size. I feel they are eating too much, but the instruction doesn't make sense either... what gives?

If they are fat, feed them less, otherwise, let them eat all they want. Some cats will only eat what they need, others will pig out.

He's a cat. Just keep the bowl full. Every cat I've known has self-regulated. I do that with my current cat and he goes through an 8 pound bag every 6-8 weeks.

Measure all the input (solid food and liquids) and compare to all output (urine, stool, blood, snot, phlegm, dander).

I've always had a bowl full of food out for my dog, and the same with every other dog I've owned. Never had a problem with them eating too much. If I were to follow the guides, she would definitely starve to death. But, she also runs 20+ miles a week between my roommate and I.

I can't imagine a cat is much different. Let them eat what they want. If they get fat, then maybe you'll have to regulate from there.

Cats are largely sedentary animals. Their bodies are designed to support themselves by catching a small amount of prey and eating raw meat. They need much less food than humans, and their ideal diet is much more nutritionally rich than the average human food. They will self-regulate their diet, but if you feed them cat food full of fillers, they'll get hungry faster and eat more, possibly leading to all the problems humans get from eating junk food. How much they overeat and what problems they develop is dependent on genetics. I recommend a food like Innova EVO and following the directions on serving size. Yes it's much more expensive, but when you only have to feed half as much and your cat is healthy, it pays off.

Iams Eukanuba dry food is another good option.

I have an 80 lbs. Lab. If allowed, they can eat all day, vomit, and continue eating ( including all regurgitated material) without missing a morsel.

He gets 1 cup of dry food in the morning and 1 cup in the afternoon.

Some animals are perfectly fine with a very small amount of food. My tarantula, which is about 7", hasn't eaten for over 6 months. I figure it's getting ready to molt, after which it'll start eating again.

Uh, what? He just recommended the equivalent of a filet mignon and you said, "mcdonalds beef patties are another good option"
