My 7850 is running too hot

I got in on the Powercolor 7850 deal for $230, but the cooling on the card really seems insufficient.

Overclocked to 1150mhz on the core and 5600mhz on the memory I'm sometimes hitting 85C under full load which seems way too hot to me.

Do you guys think I should take off the heatsink to make sure that there is thermal paste and to verify that everything is seated properly?

I might just have to go with aftermarket cooling. Even at stock this card hits 75C under load.

Not sure on the coolers for Ref 78xx, but I'd assume it is similar to ref 79xx.

I clock mine to 1125/1575 (or whatever the max slider si in overdrive, I haven't played with volts - yet) and my temps stay in the low 60s. Do you have any known issues with case air flow? What game are you using?

I can tell you right now, Trine 2 at my OC settings got me into the 80c's. I reset to default and still too hot for my liking (70c's). I play Trine 2 with 800/1300 clocks and stay in the 60c's.

So my temps are normal then. It seems as though the review samples had better cooling.

My case airflow is very good. I have 2 120mm fans on "low" for intake and a 140mm fan on "medium" for exhaust.

I wouldn't say you are in any dangerous range especially if you are overvolting.

You can give yourself some peace fo mind and check the TIMs, maybe even user something a tad better.

While I love reviews, in the end because of variables I've always found my results to be either worse or on par, but never better (that and I don't see there tweaking until my eyes bleed haha.)

Remember - review sites often get cherry picked products. You set your best foot forward.

You have to use manual fan if you overclock. Aftermarket is way better for oc'ing , though.

you oced your card by over 33% so getting in the mid 80s does not seem hot to me and I assume you can just set a new fan profile. also buying aftermarket cooling for the card seems to defeat the point of getting a card at that price point to me.

I find I get the highest temps when mining Bitcoins.

Bitmining runs your cards HOT. They are essentially putting a full load (depending on your settings of course) continously. That be the equivalent of running one of those "power viruses" like Furmark.

When I bitmined my HD 5830's turned into little furnances. I'd always joke to the GF I wonder which one would glow red first haha.

I appreciate all the feedback everyone. I'm surprised that these 7850s run so hot seeing as they consume so little power.

Have you been following the Ivy Bridge discussions? It could be a similar situation - the chip surface is just getting smaller and smaller. Less space to dissipitate heat through.

Of course, I'm just trying to make sense of it - I could be totally off haha.

Use msi after burner to set fan speed, set as high as 50-75%. You should go down to the 60s or so. These cards should be kept under 70c if possible

As other said, crank the fan speed up. The default isnt high enough for doing a 33% OC.

Yes definitely check to see if the heatsink is mounted properly. I made made a recent discovery a couple of days ago with my 7850 twin frozr II while cleaning out my case. While removing the card I noticed the the heatsink was loose, meaning the I could actually twist from side to side.

I removed the heatsink and noticed that thermal paste was basically all over the die with globs hanging off all the sides. I replaced the original paste with some as5, and remounted the heatsink. My card card is running at 1100/5800 @1.115v.

Check the screen shot, before I was getting 69-70c during load

In what games are you hitting high temps?

At 1150 core / 5600 mem on stock volts i max out..

CS:S - 52C
BC2 - 56C
BF3 - 68C

Look into getting that Arctic Twin Turbo II. Install is simple and i can walk you through it

I've been using the gui miner for Bitcoins to test the temps. In BF3 I'm at around 75C.

The fan on my card gets loud when I ramp it up. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Don your Asus card has seriously good cooling as well. Are those temps with your new Arctic Cooling setup?

Added the side panel fan on my 1200. Dropped from 73 to 66C-68C.

These coolers are only as good as the case airflow.
I wish a side panel fan would help me but I tried it and it made zero difference in temps. I was hoping to get some cooler airflow at that spot as I am paranoid about my X-Fi card getting cooked being directly above my gtx570.
